NoteThomas VERNON was remembered by his neice Emma H PALMER:
'When I was about 10 (1850) I saw him in Marple. He was stout and good looking and must have been of considerable importance. I saw him walking to and fro in front of the Navigation Inn which he then occupied. Since we left England, his Grandson William (son of Thomas VERNON) leased and occupied the same hotel.'

Concerning the loss at sea of his daughter Sarah VERNON HINCHLIFFE, her husband Hugh HINCHLIFFE, and their children Lizzie, Sarah Emma, and Charles, Thomas VERNON wrote this letter to his grandson Joseph HINCHLIFFE and wife Elizabeth:
Dear Grandson and Granddaughter, I now take the opportunity of writing a few lines to you for the first time hoping that they will find you in good health as it leaves me but very poorly and very lame at present. I was very poorly when your Father and Mother left England. I did not want them to go back to America but they was quite bent on going. I never expected to see them any more because I am getting so infirm, but I little thought of what would happen. I don't think we shall ever have the pleasure to hear of them again in this world but I hope we shall meet in Heaven where we shall be forever blest and where not a wave of trouble will roll across our peaceful breast. They might have done well in England if they could have rested themselves content. They set up a shop in Pendleton near Manchester and I believe in time they may have done very well but they would not give it a fair trial. Your Father could not rest himself content nowhere. When your Mother your sisters and brother saw that they was all bent to come back to America and that was the only reason because your Father would not settle nowhere. Your Father and brother went over last Summer to your Uncle Samuels before your Mother came to England and was there a fortnight. There was a grocery shop and beerhouse at liberty there. I believe he might have done very well, he made a taking of the place then came over to our house and told me about it. I give him all the encouragement that ever I could to settle down there. Then he goes to your Uncle Samuels at Newcastle and he stopt another fortnight and while he was there he altered his mind and would not take the shop. Trade is very bad in England especially in the cotton line. All kinds of food is very cheap but clothing is very high. We have had a very dry summer, in some places in England the cattle is famishing for want of water. All is dried up. I am now going on 74 years of age. I have buried three wives and I have been a widower going of 5 years. I live by myself missing an old woman that keeps house for me. Your Uncle William and his wife and your Uncle Thomas and his wife do not live far from me and are doing in a moderate way. Your Uncle William has no children and your Uncle Thomas and his wife has two, William and Elizabeth. I have a little money and it is in the bank and at my death if your Mother is never heard of any more you will have your Mother's share. Your Aunt Fanny Bennetts family is all got married. Only Samuel and they are doing in a moderate way and they all send their kind love to your Uncle Charles and Aunt Harriet and family. I should like you to send me a newspaper and another letter as soon as you can and let me know if you have heard anything of your parents. Your Uncles and Aunts sends their kind love to you all and except the same yourself from your affectionate
Grandfather
Thomas Vernon

I send you your Uncle Samuels directions: Mr Samuel Vernon, Cotton Spinner, New Castle, under Lyne Liverpool Road, Staffordshire.
