In 1880 he was a 35 year old apothecary and lived with his wife, Mary, and no children, at 127 Halifax Street in Petersburg. In 1910 he was 64 and lived at 16 North Market Street in Petersburg, Virginia with his wife Mary J., age 60, their two single daughters, Mary W., age 26, Agnes R., age 24 and a single nephew, Bolton W. Williams, age 27. They have been married for 35 years, and had 6 children of whom two were living in 1910. His wife was born in North Carolina and her father in Scotland and mother in North Carolina. His nephew and his parents were all born in North Carolina. The two daughters were born in Virginia.
