Wade Hampton, III, became Governor of South Carolina, United States Senator, Lieutenant General in the Confederate Army and leader of the famous "Red Shirts," who liberated South Carolina from the tragedy of Reconstruction.
"Let our children teach their children that their patriotic fathers fought for their fatherland; that they were inspired by as patriotic motives as ever fired the hearts or nerved the arms of free men; and though our Cause has gone down in disaster, in ruin, in blood; not one stain of dishonor rests upon it." - Gen. Wade Hampton, CSA - 1895
