“Gordon Shefchik, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2018 at UW Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin. Gordy was born on October 21, 1923 in Ashland, Wisconsin to Frank and Hedvie Shefchik. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Reas on December 26, 1944 at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Ashland, Wisconsin. Gordy and Betty were blessed with four children: sons Dan, Don, and Dave, and a baby daughter Mary Elizabeth. Dad was truly an amazing man! He loved to fly and was a bush pilot for sportsmen in the Ashland and Apostle Islands area. For 17 years, Gordy was a firefighter and captain with the Ashland Fire Department. He also worked for Midland Services for many years before he and Betty went into business for themselves, owning and operating B and G Heating in Ashland. Beyond these roles, Gordy was an ingenious, creative man who could fix anything. He was a generous man who was always there for people, ready to help anyone who needed him. Dad loved skiing and snowmobiling in the winter, fishing in the summer, and a good Friday night fish fry.
Dad had a way of making the life of our family incredibly memorable and fun, whether skiing with Betty and his boys at Mt. Ashwabay or White Cap Mountain, driving a ski boat for endless hours while towing his sons and their friends at Marengo Lake, taking his grandchildren on adventures, or enjoying happy summer days with extended family and friends at the cabin he and Betty built together in 1948 on Marengo Lake. These wonderful times are cherished by all of us. We will miss Dad’s sense of humor, his “Gordyisms”, and the twinkle in his eye. Gordy is survived by his beloved sons and daughter-in-law, Dan (friend, Paula Jung), Don, and Dave (Becky) Shefchik; dear grandchildren and step-grandchildren Jamie Shefchik and Jennifer (Travis) Nye; Bryan (Erica) Shefchik, Annie (Leo) Burger, and Mike (Brianna) Shefchik; Elisabeth Oasen (Mike Abraham) and Cody Oasen; precious great-grandchildren and step-great grandson Lily, Emily, and Lucy Nye; Logan and Dylan Shefchik; Ezra, Eleanor, and Ivan Burger; Aria, Hayden, and Carter Shefchik; and Alexander Abraham. Gordy is further survived by his beloved sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Doris Bowran and Bill (Ruth) Reas and Jim Reas (friend, Karla Fredrickson); many nieces and nephews; and former daughter-in-law, Janet Shefchik. Gordy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 72 years, Betty, in May 2017, parents Frank and Hedvie, his baby girl, Mary Elizabeth, brother Byron, much loved mother-in-law, Eleanor Reas, sister-in-law, Alice Reas, and brother-in-law and dear friend, Earl Hicks. We would like to thank the staff at St. Mary’s Care Center, Madison, for their kindness and devoted care for Dad in the last three years of his life and the palliative care team at UW Hospital for helping to make his final journey as peaceful as possible.
