A TRIBUTE TO DR. ROBERT E. MOODY:
Boston Globe, The (Massachusetts) 6 April 1983
Deceased Name: ROBERT E. MOODY, 82, BU HISTORIAN; WORKED ON SALTONSTALL PAPERS

A public memorial service for Dr. Robert E. Moody, 82, retired chairman of the history department at Boston University, former director of the university libraries and museums and editor of two volumes of the Saltonstall Papers, will be held at noon Saturday in First and Second Church, 66 Marlborough Street, Boston.
Dr. Moody died in New England Deaconess Hospital Monday. He had been ill for some time. He had been director of libraries from 1951 until 1960; chairman of the history department from 1960 until 1966.
Born in South Worthington, he was the son of Rev. George Reed and Sarah A. (Fallows) Moody and was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover; Boston University, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1922, and 1923; and Yale University, where he earned his PhD in 1933.
A specialist in American Colonial history, Dr. Moody had contributed to the Dictionary of American Biography, the Dictionary of American History and the Atlas of American History. He also was the editor of Province and Court Records of Maine and was the author of numerous articles and reviews for historical journals.
He was the William Edwards Huntington professor of history emeritus, and his work as editor of the first of two volumes of the Saltonstall Papers was described in a 1973 Boston Globe review as "admirably edited." It is a collection of the surviving papers of six generations of the Saltonstall
family - which in every generation gave the commonwealth magistrates, judges, sheriffs and soldiers.
At Boston University, he also had been chairman of the Board of Editors of Boston University Press; and was a member of the committee on the Bacon Lectures on the US Constitution; the committee on University Lectures and the University Library Committee. Before coming to Boston University, he had taught at the University of Michigan. A member of many professional and historical associations, he was a Phi Beta Kappa and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was a vice-president of the Bay State Historical League and the Old South Association of Boston; the Massachusetts Historical Society; the Colonial Society of Massachusetts and the American Antiquarian Society.
He leaves his wife, Eleanor (Wragg) Moody of Boston; two sons, Stephen of Boston and David of Reston, Va.; and a granddaughter. A funeral service will be private.

Professor Emeritus Robert Moody died at the age of 82. He was director of the Boston University libraries and museums from 1951 until 1960, when he became chairman of the History Department, a post he held through 1966. A specialist in American colonial history, he held the title of William Edwards Huntington Professor of History. In 1981 Professor Moody wrote to Department Chairman Dietrich Orlow: My forty-three years as an active member of the History Department were happy ones. We were a tightly knit group, especially at 688 Boylston Street where we all shared a small office with one telephone. Necessarily we shared each other's problems as well as those of the department and it was scarcely necessary to have formal meetings; communication was easy and decisions could be made promptly. They were difficult days too, a major depression, the second World War as well as later ones, the moving to the new campus, all in the midst of financial crises. There were days when it seemed impossible for the University to survive. But the sense of participation, the sharing of responsibility, made it all seem worthwhile. I am glad to be a part of it.

" My father, Robert Earle Moody (1901-1983) - professor of American colonial history at Boston University, organized his notes into a coherent document of our line of Moody's. Curiously, he also "registered" the Edmund's Coat of Arms for use in the United States by the descendants of John of Hartford, with the New England Historical and Genealogical Society in Boston. I am not sure of the date he did this - but I suspect it was in the 1950s. " David W. Moody ®5840
