He was born on 11 August 1893 at Brudenell Twp., Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada, according to Ontario Delayed Statement of Birth 5025695,2,4,1,6; or, in 1892 according to the family gravemarker.1 Alexander married Louise Maves on 10 November 1920 at Pembroke, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada.3,8,9,1 A delayed birth registration for Alexander Hartwig was made on 29 February 1960 at Killaloe, certified by Maurice Hartwig. Maurice certified that Alexander's birth year was 1893 with a ? over the 3. Since his brother Alexander's brother Arthur was born in August of 1892, this year is probably accurate, despite the evidence of his gravestone which gives his year of birth as 1892.4

Canadian Military Service - WWI
Pte. Daniel Francis Gienow of Hazlet, Saskatchewan began military service on 11 March 1916 at the age of 21 at Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, where he had his medical examination and was assigned to the 152nd Overseas Battalion. He was assigned Regimental Number 925497. Ralph Gienow tells me that Daniel's father was so upset by his enlisting, that he did not speak to Dan between the time of his enlistment, and the time he left home. By Sep. 7th, 1916 he was at Camp Hughes west of Carberry, Manitoba where he was hospitalized with "rheumatism", being discharged back to his unit on the 21st. On Oct 3rd, 1916 he sailed from Halifax for England with his unit aboard the "S.S. Missanabie," arriving on the 20th. By Dec. 7th, he was in France and taken on strength in the 5th Battalion, Saskatchewan Regiment, Canadian Infantry. He was described as being 5' 10" with a dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Daniel Gienow of Balgonie, Saskatchewan. He was assigned regimental number 925497.13,4 Daniel Francis Gienow was killed in action on 9 April 1917.
