Maud (Kilbourn) Thorndike to Georgiana Bowditch, 19 March 1912

[From Maud (Kilbourn) Thorndike in Sioux City, Iowa, to Georgiana Bowditch. She teases Georgiana about not writing more often, and hopes she isn't ill, and says the weather is still "heavenly," and that they are playing lots of golf.

Maud (Kilbourn) Thorndike was the wife of Georgiana's cousin Abbot Thorndike.

The letter is dated 19 March, without a year, but from the comment about "still having heavenly weather," and the remarks about the warm climate in the previous letter, this one was probably written in 1912.]

Dearest Cousin Georgie,

What's the matter with you, all of a sudden? From being a first-class, gifted good correspondent, you suddenly stop writing altogether, or when you do write, just send a few lines. I do hope that you are not ill! For it does not seem like you. And Paul1 writes that they are (or were) growing anxious because not a word had come from you since you left them. If you are ill, do have someone write for you and tell us about it.

But perhaps you are only discouraged, because I asked you to write me just what you thought of each member of the family. You don't have to do that all at once. You might take it in installments if you prefer, you know.

We are still having heavenly weather here, almost as warm as summer (and warmer than this summer at Cedar Cliff), and we are playing lots of golf and staying out in it all we possibly can.

Today I have been across the river (the big Sioux river) over in South Dakota playing golf. Three states meet here, and from the top of one of three high hills you can look into all three. They are South Dakota and Nebraska and Ia. The Missouri River makes a big bend here, turning right around the town on two sides, and just above us, to the west, the Big Sioux River flows into it. That is where our prettiest Country Club is.2 When we cross the river, we are in South Dakota.

Abbot3 is well and sends best love. Do send us a line soon, or have someone else, if you are not well.

Very affectionately your cousin Maud.4

Paul1 says you made "a big hit" with everyone in Boston and they all miss you.

  1. Paul Thorndike (1863-1939), Georgiana's cousin
  2. Based on the location, the Country Club mentioned is probably now the Two Rivers Golf Club in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota.
  3. Abbot Thorndike (1866-1935), Maud's husband, Georgiana's cousin
  4. Maud Alice Kilbourn (1866-1936)
