He served as a private in the U. S. Army special services during World War II, enlisting on 26 March 1943.2,3,4 Except for a period of time in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, he lived in the area of White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, most of his life.2 He worked as a self-employed home builder for 22 years, and for Platz Excavating as a heavy equipment operator for 10 years. He also owned Velie's Sunoco and Velie's Auto Sales in White Pigeon.2

He was discharged on 30 October 1945.6,3 He lived in Vicksburg, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, all his life2,7,8, where he worked for the Simpson-Lee Paper Co.3 He was a member of the Chapman Church of the Nazarene.3
When their children were young, he and his wife Pauline spent two weeks each summer camping with a travel trailer, and visited most of the 50 states.5
