In Columbus he worked primarily as an accountant, but was listed as a clerk in his 1938 marriage record and the 1941 city directory, and as a laborer in the 1949 city directory.9 In 1940 and in 1954 he was working for the Columbus Coated Fabrics Corp. in Columbus.2,10
He and Ruth may have moved together to Hawaii, sometime after 1954.11

His birth record lists his name as Ferdinand Elmer Richard Carlson, but all other records found online list him as Richard, Richard E., or Richard Elmer.4
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting on 11 December 1942 in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California.9 He was a private first class with the 46th Depot Group, 8th Army Air Force8, and was discharged at the end of the war, on 18 October 1945.10

After their marriage she and her husband Marion lived with her parents at 453 West Orleans St. in Otsego, Allegan Co., Michigan, and were at the same address at the time of Marion's death in 1978.8,9,10
On 5 April 1974 she and Marion were involved in an accident along the Ohio Turnpike, about eight miles west of the Norwalk exit. Marion was driving their camper, and had pulled over to check a water leak. They were struck from behind by a car driven by Margaret E. Banahan, forcing the camper into a ditch. Marion was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Bellevue, Ohio, in fair condition. Fern was treated and released, along with her uncle and aunt, Bill and Margery Swikert, who were traveling with them.11
She moved from Otsego to Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., Michigan, in 1989, probably to live with her son Frank and his wife Susan, who cared for her the last few years of her life.6
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Otsego, and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, Otsego-Bradley Chapter No. 169.4
She greatly enjoyed knitting, sometimes for 10-12 hours a day, and in 1994 donated 102 pairs of mittens she made to the Charitable Union in Battle Creek. She also knitted caps for infants in the Battle Creek Health System.12

In 1940 he was living with his parents in Concord Twp., Elkhart Co., Indiana, and working with the NYA (the National Youth Administration).10,11 In June 1942, when he registered for the World War II draft, he was working for Ollie Roth, an auto dealer in Elkhart.12
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting on 11 September 1945 in Indianapolis, Indiana.9,13
After the war he returned to Concord Twp., and is listed there with his wife Phyllis and their children in the 1950 census.14 He was then working as a cabinet maker for a house trailer manufacturer.14 He later moved to California, and was living in Tujunga, Los Angeles Co., in 1963.15 He soon afterward moved to Hemet, Riverside Co., California, where remained until his death in 1993.6
He was a charter member of the Moose Lodge in Hemet, and worked as a supervisor at Bendix Corp. in Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., California, for 13 years. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and repairing bicycles.6

She graduated on 3 June 1943 from Elkhart High School in Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana.10 In 1940, while still in high school, she was doing office work with the NYA (the National Youth Administration)11, and in 1950 she was working as a billing supervisor for a pharmaceutical company.12 She later worked many years for Delta Airlines.5
She and her husband Clint lived in Torrance, Los Angeles Co., California.13,2 In 2004, after Clint's death, she was living in Flaherty, Meade Co., Kentucky,14, and at the time of her death was living in Bloomfield, Nelson Co., Kentucky.5
She was a Mormon, active in the women's relief society, and a member of the Eastern Star and the Old Kentucky Homemakers Club.5

She and her husband Jim lived in Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana, until 1963, when they moved to Hemet, Riverside Co., California. In June 1979 they moved to Bozeman, Gallatin Co., Montana. In 1995 they traveled frequently between Bozeman and Nampa, Canyon Co., Idaho, helping Cleo's brother Dale Swikert modify the former Carnation Milk Co. building in Nampa to manufacture cargo trailers for his new company, Interstate West, and later to help their daughter Sharon move there. By 1996 they were spending most of their time in Nampa, and in 1997 they sold their home in Bozeman and moved there permanently.6
After her husband’s death in 2004 Cleo frequently visited her daughter Nancy and her husband Ed in Mount Vernon, Skagit Co., Washington, and later in Colorado Springs, El Paso Co., Colorado.6

He graduated from Elkhart High School in Elkhart, Elkhart Co., Indiana6, then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, enlisting on 1 December 1945, and was discharged on 11 June 1947. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on 29 December 1950, and served in both Korea and Vietnam.10,12 He was stationed in England from 1951 to 19546 with the rank of airman first class.6 He was stationed in Denver, Colorado, in 1963 as a master sergeant, and taught photography at Lowery Air Force Base.13 He left the service on 30 April 1971.12
He moved to Hemet, Riverside Co., California, in 197011, where he worked as a repairman for Host Beauty Craft, a mobile home service company, from 1972 until his death in 1992.11
