  • [S1616] Abbot/Bowditch Family Letters. The Abbot/Bowditch Family Letters were written by friends and family members of Elizabeth Blanchard Abbot between about 1840 and 1920. Elizabeth was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, in 1821, and moved from there to her husband Joseph Henry Bowditch's home in North Carolina immediately after their marriage in 1845. Most of the letters were written to Elizabeth in North Carolina, but some were written by Elizabeth herself, and others were written between other family members and friends. They are generally complete and in good to very good condition, although some are torn or have parts missing. A few are charred at folded edges, possibly from a fire that destroyed Elizabeth and Joseph's house in 1880. Some include "cross writing," the practice of turning the page 90 degrees and continuing a letter by overwriting previously written text in order to save weight and/or paper. They are part of the family history material saved by Elizabeth's daughter Georgiana Bowditch, then passed down successively to Georgiana's niece Blanche (Bowditch) (Hamilton) Marsh, to Blanche's cousin Frederick Tryon Bowditch, and to Fred's son David Nathanial Bowditch. They are currently (2016) in the possession of Dave's daughter Jane Ellen Bowditch and her husband Charles Towne.

  • [S3393] Abbot Letters to Hannah Rantoul. Most of these letters and notes were written by Elizabeth (Abbot) Bowditch to Hannah Rantoul. Elizabeth and Hannah were friends from childhood in Beverly, Massachusetts. A few short letters were written by Elizabeth's sisters Georgiana, Martha, and Ellen, her daughter Georgiana, and her sister-in-law Sarah (Bowditch) Abbot. Also included are two items written by others on the deaths of Elizabeth's sister Georgiana, and uncle Samuel Stickney. They are generally in good condition. Some include "cross writing", the practice of turning the page 90 degrees and continuing a letter by over-writing earlier text in order to save weight and/or paper. The originals are part of the Hannah Rantoul collection (Box 3, Folder 49) at the Beverly Historical Society (now Historic Beverly) in Beverly, Massachusetts. Each letter and note has an identifying number added by the Beverly Historical Society, in the format "BHS ID# xxx."

This is the report of the Commissioners chosen to partition the land owned by Elizabeth (Abbot) Bowditch, as a result of the suit brought by John H. • [S4467] Complaint, and Amendment to Complaint, Superior Court, Yancey Co., North Carolina, 11 June 1904 and 3 August 1905; J. H. Bowditch, Wm. Hall and Mary Hall v. J. A. Bowditch, G. A. Bowditch, C. I. Bowditch, Fred Bowditch, Joseph Bowditch and J. E. Abbott. This is a complaint, and a later amendment, filed by John H. Bowditch and Mary (Bowditch) Hall (with her husband William Hall), children of Nathaniel I. Bowditch, the (presumed to be) deceased son of Elizabeth (Abbot) Bowditch. The original complaint asks for an equal share of Elizabeth's estate. An amendment to the complaint was filed 3 August 1905, and asks that deeds made by Elizabeth granting lands to her children be declared invalid based on her diminished mental capacity. These documents were found among Elizabeth's estate records, along with a subpoena issued 24 August 1905 to T. B. Gibbs, William Hutchins, James E. Robinson, M. M. Hilliard, and J. B. Hilliard, summoning them to testify in the case on 1 September 1905. The complaint and amendment are apparently not the "official" versions filed with the court. None of the pages have any signatures, and the amendment leaves all the details of the existing deeds blank (i.e., the specific recipients, dates, and deed book references).
