Genealogies of the Connecticut Family: Descendants of John Stiles, of Windsor, Conn., and of Mr. Francis Stiles, of Windsor and Stratford, Conn., 1635-1894; Also the Connecticut-New Jersey Families, 1720-1894, and the Southern (or Bermuda-Georgia) Family, 1635-1894. With Contributions to the Genealogies of Some New York and Pennsylvania Families and An Appendix, Containing Information Concerning the English Families of the Name. (Jersey City, New Jersey: Doan & Pilson, Printers, 1895). The foundation of this genealogy is the earlier work done by Rev. Ezra Stiles from about 1762-1764. At the time he was pastor of the Second Church in Newport, Rhode Island, and later President of Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut. This material was loaned to Henry Reed Stiles by Ezra Stiles' great-granddaughter Mrs. Kate Gannett Wells of Boston, Massachusetts. The author also credits: (1) "the quartette of aged Stiles sisters" in Old Windsor, Connecticut, for "priceless stores of tradition and personal knowledge"; (2) Lewis Ogden Stiles, owner of The Jerseyman newspaper in Morristown, New Jersey, Helen Huber of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Lafe Stiles Pence of Lebanon, Kentucky, for information on the descendants of "Long Jonathan"; and (3) his brother S. Edward Stiles of Brooklyn, New York, especially for help in tracing the English Stiles family.
