BiographyTaken from HCHSoc Siegfried Scrapbook in Carthage, IL, " THIRTY YEARS AGO - Thursday, Dec. 3, 1936 - David S. Hamma passed away at his home in Sonora township on Thanksgiving day, age 72 years.

From Nancy Shevokas by e-mail 1/25/2002: .."OBIT from a 1936 newspaper clipping, no title or date of the newspaper and the 1936 was written by hand."

"HAMMA FUNERAL HELD AT NAUVOO SUNDAY AFTERNOON-----Funeral services for the late David Hamma, 72 of the Nauvoo community, who was found dead Friday, Nov. 27, was held from the Lyle Roberts funeral home at 2 o'clock the following Sunday afternoon, with Rev. G.W. Knight of Hamilton officiating, assisted by Rev. Powell of the Nauvoo Methodist church.
April 7, 1908 David Hamma was elected PoundMaster for Sonora twp on the Republican ticket; taken from the Nauvoo Independent dated 4/8/1908

Mr. Hamma, who had been at the home of his son, Walter Hamma, for Thanksgiving started to walk home that evening, apparently in his usual health. Friday evening his granddaughter, Marjorie Hamma, seven year old daughter of Walter Hamma, when going down the lane between the two farm homes, found Mr. Hamma lying dead in the path.

An inquest was held at the Lyle Roberts home in Nauvoo on Saturday morning at nine o'clock. The jurymen were Fred Walther, John Johnson, Russell Huntley, George Deeg, and Harry Argast. The cause of death was a heart attack.

David Hamma was born in Sonora township August 25, 1864. He was one of eleven children born to Christian and Melissa Hamma. He was married to Catherine Diemer of Nauvoo December 28, 1887. Three children were born of this union, Mrs. Vina Johnson of Nauvoo, Mrs. Ida Kruse and Walter Hamma of Sonora. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1929.

All of his life was spent in Sonora where he engaged in fruit raising.

Besides his three children he is also survived by six grandchildren, Mrs. Alice Wing, Dale and Arline Johnson of Nauvoo, Rachel, Marjorie, and David Hamma of Sonora. He leaves three brothers, Henry of Sonora, William of Hamilton and Frank Hamma of Davenport, Iowa; one sister Sadie Ballinger of Davenport.

The pallbearers at the funeral were Lee Diton, Carl and Gabe Wilkens, Robert Heitman, George Schreiber, and Mr. Berry. Internment was in the Nauvoo Cemetery. (From newspaper clipping obtained from the Hancock County Historical Society)"

NAUVOO INDEPENDENT Dec. 3, 1936 - "DAVE HAMMA DIED SUDDENLY LAST THURSDAY - Victim of Heart Disease--Funeral in Nauvoo Sunday--The sudden death of Mr. David S. Hamma, well known citizen of Sonora township, Thursday, came as a shock to his relatives and many friends. Mr. Hamma's dead body was found on an across-field road between his home and the home of his son Walter, about midway between the two places, the road being about one half mile long. It was found by his two grandchildren, Maruerite and David Hamma, who were on their way to a rural mail box on the road on which their grandfather lived.

Dave had gone to the home of his son Walther and family to spend part of Thanksgiving and he had eaten a hearty meal at noon. At about 3:30 p.m. he started for home, apparently in his usual good health, and not complaining of feeling badly. However it was known that he had heart trouble, and had been taking treatment for it for several years. He evidently dropped dead, as a package he was carrying under his arm was still there and the position of the body indicated that he died without a struggle. The body, badly frozen, was found Friday afternoon about 4 o'clock, having laid out for 24 hours. The children, upon finding the body, hurriedly went home and told their parents who immediately went to the scene. The coroner was notified who told them to take the body to the house. Later it was brought to the W.L. Roberts funeral home in Nauvoo, where and inquest was held Saturday morning

Coroner D.L. Frazee impannelled the following jury: George Deeg, foreman; E.A. Walther, Willis Diemer, Harry J. Argast, Russell E. Huntley and J. L. Johnson. Witnesses examined were Mr. and Mrs. Walter D. Hamma, Marguerite Hamma, Oscar Matice, George R. Schreiber, and W.L. Roberts. The verdict rendered was that "death was due to mitral insufficiency".

David S. Hamma was born i Sonora township, August 25, 1864, and at the time of his death was 72 years, 8 months and one day of age. He was one of twelve children born to Christian and Melissa Hamma. He was married December 28, 1887 to Miss Katherine Diemer of Nauvoo, by Elder H. R. Trickett, at the old Christian Hamma home where all the Hamma children were married. Three children were born to this union, all living--Mrs. Vina Johnson of Nauvoo, Mrs. Ida Kruse and Walter D. Hamma of Sonora township. There were six grandchildren, Mrs. Alice Wing, Dale and Arlene Johnson, Rachel, Marguerite and David Hamma. Also surviving are three brothers, Henry H. of Sonora, William J. of Hamilton, Ill., and Frank Hamma of Davenport, Iowa; and two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Ballenger of Davenport, IA and Mrs. Aimee Crosby of Keokuk, IA.

The daughter, Mrs. Ida Kruse, was unable to to attend the funeral as she was in California. She could not be reached by telegram to be informed of her father's death.

The deceased lived all of his life in the vicinity where he was born. He followed farming by occupation, making a specialty of fruit raising. He was a consistent member of the Golden Point Christian Church his entire life and was an Elder at the time of his death. He belonged to no societies or lodges. He was an upright and honorable gentleman, a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, and an esteemed citizen.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the W.L. Roberts funeral home, Rev. Geo. W. Knight of Hamilton, pastor of the Golden Point Christian church, officiating. Two hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "I Need Thee Every Hour" were sung by Mrs. M. Baumert and Mrs. Ed. Kemler with Miss Rosetta Hertel at the organ. The pallbearers were Gabe and Carl Wilkens, Lee Diton, Geoge Schreiber, Jesse Enright and Robert Heitman. Interment was in the Nauvoo Cemetery."3
