KERRVILLE - Mrs. Betty B. Houghton, 86, of Kerrville, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her residence. A resident of Kerrville since 1972, she was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Dallas. She attended Dallas Schools and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1936. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and had been very active as church librarian since 1978. Her husband Reeves Houghton preceded her in death in 2000.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Kimberly Walker of Houston and Tress D. Buttle of Ramona, Calif; three great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Bob Walker of Las Cruces, N.M; and a cousin, Frank Robert Adams of Dallas.

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Warren Hornung officiating. Private interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.²

Biography

Derl Houghton: Brown was born, Orville Emerson Houghton on January 23, 1910, to Frank and Martha Houghton. He was born on the old home place near Brad. He said he was given the name “Brown” by his father who used to bounce him on his knee and sing this little tune. “Rufas Rastus Johnson Brown, What you gonna do when the rent comes ‘round. What you gonna do, What you gonna say, You won’t have a nickel for the judgement day.” His father also had nicknames for the other children; Florice was called Johnson, and Dick was called Rastus, but the name “Brown” stuck with him for life.

Brown said he remembers his father as his best friend. By the time he was six years old he would followed him everywhere he went. His father taught him to milk cows, and how to handle a cross cut saw and ax, how to drive a team of horses, and to plow and harvest. He taught him how to handle the animals, to do a honest days work, and how to play baseball. He recalls growing up the on farm, working and playing with his brothers and sisters, with much pleasure.

During his high school years, Brown and cousin Orlen Anderson, pick up and moved to Arizona. There they worked farm labor for Jesse Williams, and after school started they worked for Pennington Dairy. Brown graduated from Tempe High School in 1931. After graduation, Brown returned to Texas where he and brother Oscar went into a cedar post business. That endeavor didn’t turn out so well, so Brown joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and they took him to Oregon to put in telephone lines. He was stationed in the Klamath area and later in Bend. By that spring, he was moved to the Reno area, and while attending a banquet at the CCC Camp, he met a girl who made him all twitter-patted. The relationship began, and as fate would have it, he and Ellen Elizabeth Ball were married January 19, 1938. He remained in the CCC’s for another year, then spent the next few years working in the Reno area.

Next they moved to Oregon and then to Eureka, California for a year. There their first child was born, Janice Gail, on February 3, 1943. They moved back up to Oregon where Brown went to work for the Rouge River Valley Creamery in Central Point, and work for 43 years. Their son, John Phillip was born there, January 13, 1948. He retired retired from the dairy. He and Ellen lived in Central Point where they have lived since 1943 until his death.. Brown enjoyed fishing, reading and just working around the house.

Brown Remembers....

It is always fun to get some of the older members of the family to remember back to when they were young and tell some of the stories of the “good old days”. This last year, Orville Houghton, (better known as “Brown”) sent a letter with several stories from his childhood. We would like to share some of his letter with you. Brown is a son of Frank F. & Martha J. Houghton, born in 1909.

“The town of Caddo was 6 miles from the old home place. We rented a farm three mile from Caddo and moved there for five years. That farm was called the Cowert farm. It was a much bigger farm and closer to school. I was eight years old and Florice and I walked to school. She is two years older than I. The railroad didn’t run through Caddo and it was sixteen miles to Strawn and the railroad. We went by wagon and team there to buy most of the things we needed, because things were lots cheaper. On one trip over there we went to bring back a sewing machine that my mother ordered.

While my father went into the depot to get the machine, he left me to hold the horses. About that time a big steam switch engine came along. The engineer kept blowing the whistle. That scared the horses so bad I could hardly hold them down. They were rearing up and trying to run and I was doing my very best just to hold them down. Finally the engineer drove the engine on down the track and the horses calmed down.

What a relief it was! My father came out of the depot with the machine. I was only eleven, and far to young for a job like that. I had been riding horses since I was seven. I was driving a team of horses to a plow or planter when I was about nine. I was seven when I started milking the family cows.

There is always something to do an a farm, but I liked the planting and harvesting the best. We all worked, but there were times we played and went fishing. Sometimes we went fishing with two or three other families. We went in wagons and camped out. There were three good creeks not far away, and there was the Brazos River. In the summer there was ice cream suppers that several families got together and had ice cream and cake."

Rosa Whitley wrote and reported that she still has her mothers sewing machine Brown told about in his story. It is a Franklin, and it still works! It was ordered from Sears & Roebucks in 1921.²

"A Tribute to Aunt Rosie" by: Derl Houghton (Nephew), 5/21/02

Aunt Rosie was a special link to our past and a beacon to the future. She represented that special legacy passed on to us from our ancestry. A special one indeed. Who was Aunt Rosie? She was many things to many people, all being positive and uplifting. I would venture to say one could not find a single person with anything bad to say about her. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, aunt, and special friend. She especially loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never forgot her extended family such as nephews & nieces as well. They were special to her and we loved her. There was a special connection for me (Derl), my brother Jack and our half-sister Ruby. I know that they share my feelings.

Aunt Rosie gives true meaning to the term "Natural". What you saw is what you got. She loved the land, her garden, home cooking and canning, the seasons, the animals, people and the Lord. She did not have a dishonest or devious bone in her body. She loved and respected her parents, brothers and sisters, and all of us kids. She had a wonderful almost dry sense of humor and loved a good joke and to laugh. She did not know the meaning of "Pride of Life" or the distractions it brings. She just tried to do the right and proper thing.

I did not have the opportunity for a day-day or casual relationship with her. The times that I physically saw her or communicated with her were few and far between but mentally and spiritually, she was never far away.

I know that she loved my father, and her brother (Richard) and suffered a great loss as did we when he died unexpectedly when I was three. I think she was able to keep a part of him alive in his children. I have been told we all demonstrated many of his tendencies and mannerisms. She kept in touch with my mother (Donnie) through the years and came to visit us on several occasions. She may not have realized it but we found our father in her as well. I always felt that when they had visited it was like seeing him.

The last time I saw her (July 2001), she asked me if I remembered a pair of shoes that I had when I was a baby beginning to walk. I told her I did. As a matter of fact I still have them as my mother had them bronzed while I was still a child. I will always have them. She was surprised and pleased and told me she and Uncle Henry had bought those shoes for me when my dad had died and I needed shoes real bad. I had not remembered the story but was pleased that they had come from her. She was pleased that I still had them.

She has always had a genuine concern and caring for us as we grew up, had children, and grandchildren. I have had some personal tragedies in my life and she was always encouraging. She was almost like a mother or should I say a big sister in her concern and compassion for me.

Aunt Rosie is a link to our past and represents a genetic link to our grandparents uncles, aunts, cousins etc. that have passed. I can witness that she was part of those family members that I remember from the past. I see the same traits in her children. For those who did not know them, but knew her knew them. She was the sum total of portions of all their personalities, and therefore a window for us to see and know those who came before us. Our elderly are Gods way of showing us where we came from and our children are his way of showing us the future. I know her children and and they share the same spirit that I observed in her parents, brothers and sisters. That spirit is alive and well and has been quietly passed to the current and future generations with dignity and purpose.

Aunt Rosie, Thank you for being a loving and caring example in our lives. We reluctantly bid you farewell for the moment and will miss you. We will never forget you. Although our hearts are burdened with pain, we quietly celebrate your victory. You are a winner in the race of life and we can only imagine your joy today as you experience your homecoming with the lord and those relatives and loved ones that have preceded you. I'm thinking how I would like to have told you that when you get there you tell your brother (our father), whom we all missed so much, that we love him. We will see you again. Until that time may you rest in peace and enjoy that wonderful place and tell all of our loved ones "Hi" until we meet again. It is our prayer that God bless and richly reward you and sustain your family and may their sorrow be bearable and comforted.

MINERAL WELLS - Maybon Etta Houghton of Mineral Wells died Friday at a Mineral Wells hospital She was 92. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home in Mineral Wells. Burial will be in Willow Pond Cemetery in Palo Pinto County. Mrs. Houghton was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God in Mineral Wells. She had lived in Palo, Pinto County most of her life. Survivors: Two daughters, Nettie Boa- tright of Hamlin and Pearl Windland of Mineral Wells; four sons, Marvin Story of Mineral Wells, C.M. Houghton and Earl Houghton, both of Hamlin, and Truman Houghton of Denton; three stepsons, Sher man Houghton of Hamlin, Eugene Hough- ton of Sweetwater and D.D. Houghton of Dallas; 19 grandchildren; 51 great-grand- children; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

HAMLIN C.M. Houghton. 77, died Wednesday, Jan., 24.2001, at a local hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Hamlin Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Ted Miller and the Rev. James Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home. Bom m Palo Pinto County, he was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II. Mr. Houghton moved to the Hamlin area in 1947 and worked as a forklift loader for the Celotex Corp. for 36 years. He married Wanda Perry Groves in Anson. He was a member of the First Assembly of God. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Houghton of Hamlin; a son. Orville Houghton of Lake Brownwood; a daughter, Yvonne Estes of Sylvester; a brother. Truman Houghton of Hamlin; a sister. Pearl Wind and of Mineral Wells; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, six brothers and two grandchildren.

Robert M. Houghton May 15, 1926 February 4, 2012 Robert Moore Houghton passed away February 4, 2012 in Reno, Nevada.

Robert (Bob) was born on the Houghton sheep ranch in Corning, California., to Ornan Houghton, and Mildred Moore Houghton.

At age 14 Bob's dad died and Bob moved to Southern California where he attended Yorba Linda High School with his Uncle "Woody" and Aunt Edna and Cousin, Shirley Moore.

After high school, Bob enlisted in the Air Force, serving a combined 16 years. Serving in Korea and Japan with the 39th Fighter Squadron.

Bob worked in shipping with 3 M Corporation in Monrovia, Ca. for 17 years, till his retirement in 1995, when he and his wife Dolores, retired in Reno-Sparks area in Nevada.

Bob is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dolores Glaser Houghton, his sister-in-law and her husband , Martha and Kay Iwata of Sparks, Nevada. Cousin, Shirley Moore Chinberg, of Dewey, Arizona and by numerous very dear Cousins of the Chism family of Yerington, Nevada.

Bob also leaves behind his two very dear friends, Skip and Ron, whose friendship he treasured.

A graveside service will be held at a future date at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora, California

Cremation Entrusted to John Sparks Memorial Cremation and Burial Society.
