Biography

Derl Houghton: Frank Boyt Houghton was born December 3, 1901 near Mt. Vernon in East Texas. He was the third child of Sherman and Ella Houghton. When the children were young, Sherman moved his family to Fisher County, Texas, near McCaulley. There they farmed, but later he and a partner bought a general store that he owned for years. Frank grew up there in Fisher County. Ann said that she met Frank at the Church of Christ in McCaulley. She was Anna Gruben who lived in nearby Royston. Later that summer, Frank asked her out for a date, a date which led him to the alter on December 24, 1928. They lived on a small farm just east of Royston for two years.

Their first child was born January 21, 1930, and they named him Joe Boyt Houghton. She said he was a delightful little boy and brought nothing but joy and pride to their hearts. Soon after Joe's birth, they moved to the Houghton Farm just north of McCaulley.

In the early part of June in 1934, they told little Joe they had ordered him a sister from Montgomery Wards. His sister did arrive on June 29th and they named her Jeannine. Later that afternoon the Watkins man came by and Joe met him at the door. The man wanted to see his little sister for he had brought her a can of baby powder. When he went to leave, he asked Joe if he could take her home with him. Joe dashed between the man and his sister and said, "No you can't. But you can order one just like her from Montgomery Wards.

Frank and his family lived on the Houghton Farm for eleven years. In 1941, they bought a farm near Royston, where Ann grew up, and they built and new home. Joe and Jeannine still attended the McCaulley school were Joe was the Captain of his football team.

Mr. Waldrop, who also lived in McCaulley owned a private plane and would give rides to anyone who wanted. One Sunday, Joe and Mr. Waldrop were flying around the area and the plane crashed killing them both. That was October 19, 1947.

Jeannine finished her education and went to work for an oil company in Midland, Texas. This is where she met and married her husband, Bob Robertson. They had two sons, who are now grown and married. Bob and Jeannine now live in Dallas, Texas.

Frank and Ann kept on farming until Frank found that he had cancer. He passed away December 9, 1967. Ann continued farming and stayed busy for years afterwards, and passed away in 1998¹
