Funeral services for Mrs. Ella Marshall Houghton. 88, a charter member of the Zoological Society of St. Louis, were held at2p m. today at the Mittelberg Funeral Home, 23 W. Lockwood ave.. Web- ster Groves. The Rev. Herbert Watson; pastor of the Midland Presbyterian Church, officiated Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Houghton died Thursday of infirmities at the Pine Crest Nurs- ing Home, Ballwin, Mo. A resident of Webster Groves for more than 40 years, she was the widow of Jerome A. He practiced most of his career in St. Louis, MO, later in Excelsior Springs, MO.
He practiced medicine during the Great Depression. Because of his strong political views (I’m not sure what they were), he was released from the hospital that employed him and he developed a private practice. He worked for cash or at times barter. He served a number of folks for free when they were unable to come up with either form of payment. A number of those “free” customers were professional athletes (mostly Italian baseball and soccer players I was told) that needed physicals to compete. He became a member of the staff at McCleary Memorial Hospital in Excelsior Spring in 1951 and ended his career working with that hospital.⁶

Malcolm A. 'Mal' Houghton
Malcolm A. “Mai" Houghton, 76, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Johnson Memorial Hospital. He was a resident of Franklin United Methodist Community. He was born Aug. 15, 1925, in Chicago. His parents were Malcolm S. and Helen (Green) Houghton. He married Christinia L. (McDevitt) Hamon on Feb. 22, 1968, in Manhattan, Kan. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Kenneth Houghton of Renton, Wash; a stepson, the Rev. C. Mac Hamon of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren; and one stepgreat- grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
He was employed by the federal government in the payroll and accounting department for 40 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving as a staff sergeant.
The Rev. C. Mac Hamon will conduct a service at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wright Memorial Chapel in the Franklin United Methodist Community. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service Thursday at the chapel. Inurnment will be a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Vandivier-Tudor Funeral Home in Franklin.
Memorial contributions may be made to Benevolent Fund of the Franklin United Methodist Community, 1070 W. Jefferson St., Franklin, IN 46131.
