Born in 1923, she was the daughter of Glen Walker Cole and Eleanor Houghton Cole of Corning, New York. Her grandfather, Alanson B. Houghton, was the American Ambassador to England and Germany, and her uncle, Amory Houghton, was Ambassador to France. Her father was president of Corning Glass Works during World War II. A graduate of Foxcroft School, she attended Vassar College for two years and then went to work for the Navy League in New York City.
In 1946, she married Frank Kingsbury Heyniger of Corning and they spent the next twenty-four years at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ, where they lived on campus and were active in school life. Mr. Heyniger died in 1970 and she married the Reverend Brendan Griswold in 1974 and moved to Buffalo, NY. There she became president of The Women of St. Paul's Cathedral and a member of the board of the Philharmonic Orchestra. Always communityminded, her special interests were Head Start, Caanan House (a half-way house for women prisoners), Hospice, and St. Aidan's Chapel in South Dartmouth, MA ( her service was at same chapel built by her grandfather A.B.H. (St Aidens)). Reverend Griswold predeceased her in 2010. She is also predeceased by her son, Cole Heyniger.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan H. Cole of California; and by two step-children, Dr. Kim Griswold of Buffalo and Geoffrey Griswold of Atlanta. There are six grandchildren. A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 18th, 2015, at St Aiden's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Aidan's Chapel, South Dartmouth, MA. Published in Naples Daily News on June 18, 2015²

My maternal grandmother was Audrey Houghton, daughter of Harvey Houghton, who came from the line of Ralph Houghton. My Mother, Helen Bircham Clark passed away this February. She told me that the extended family moved from Lewiston (Montmorency county) to Lansing (Ingham County) Michigan for better work when she was a small child (Mother was born in 1914). That included Rua and her family, Audrey her husband Clyde Bircham and my mother Helen, her brother Thomas and Genieve, who was called Jean. Jean married George R. Ellsworth. She died at age 50 (according to a newspaper obituary).She and George had a son names Gary M.Ellsworth. (Accordng to an obituary) Rua taught school in the Lewiston areas and married a Clyde J. Klotz to whom she was married for nearly 42 years. She and Klotz lived in Lansing for 38 years. They had a daughter named Dorothy who married John Ames and had one child, John Jr.. Given the information about Rua's marriage duration, the family move to Lansing was probably around 1924.The extended family move also included Harvey Houghton and his wife Genieve Stansboro and Genieve's Mother. At least some of the men in the family had been involved in the lumber industry in the areas near and in Montmorency county. My grandmother had told my Mother that Douglas Houghton was a relative, but looking at your family lines, it must have been a link over 6 generations back. It looks as if there was a pattern of naming children after grandparents, so my guess is that a common ancestor in England would be a John Houghton.What evidence do you have that Ralph and John Houghton do NOT have a common ancestor? Given their location in the same area in MA, it seems plausible that they could have been cousins. Any suggestion on how to pursue the English links? Any indication of where in England they came from?
