Houghton Cecile Houghton Erroneous statements: Sir Ralph Houghton was indeed the son of Sir Richard Hoghton and that he chose to keep that fact a secret after to immigrated to America. John Houghton, (1593-1635) arrived in North America from England on June 20, 1635.41 John was born on May 19, 1593, in Bedfordshire, England, and was a passenger on the ship Abigail when it set sail from Plymouth, England, and ar-rived in Boston, Massachusetts. p. 47 The two cousins, John and Ralph Houghton, who settled in America with their families in 1647, were also descended from Sir Richard Hoghton, who was born in 1570. These Houghtons were descendants of Adam de Hoghton, the Bishop of St. David and Chancellor of England who died in 1389. Thus, both John and Ralph Houghton can trace their ancestors back to Roger de Busli, who as we have learned was one of the William the Conqueror‘s gen-erals in 1066. p. 47 On June 20, 1635, John Houghton (1593-1635) arrived at the Massachusetts Bay Colony from England. John was born on May 19, 1593, in Bedfordshire, England, and was a passenger on the ship Abigail when it set sail from Plymouth, England, and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts. and for future generations. John Houghton is listed as the 29th passenger on the manifest of the sailing ship Abigail, but a careless entry or perhaps just poor penmanship appeared to have listed John‘s age as four, when in fact it was 42. This error has caused a considerable amount of confusion for latter gene-alogists and historians, but the correct transcription for his age should have been 42 years-old. He listed the town of Bedford as the place he intended to inhabit, and listed his place of birth as "Eaton Bray, Co. Dedham." [a Joh, age 4, is 25th passenger] John‘s Houghton‘s parents were John and Catherine Houghton and he was married to Damarius Buckmaster (1593-1666). Church records report that this John Houghton was christened on May 19, 1593. In 1647, the next Houghton ancestors that came to America were two cousins, John and Ralph Houghton. Many of the thousands of Houghton families living in the United States today can trace their ancestors back to one of these two Houghtons. p. 68 [ not cousins via DNA] John and his wife Beatrix Joselyn (1625-1720) were married in Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, England, and arrived on the sailing sloop Abigail, with their three children: John, Jacob, and Mary. John Houghton is listed as the Town Clerk of Lancaster, Massachusetts, but after the Indian massacre of 1675-1676, the Houghton family moved with his cousin Ralph‘s family to the safer location of Woburn, Massachusetts. p. 68 (CJV: town clerk is son Justice John Houghton; not Joselyn) Ralph Houghton was born in Lancashire, England, in 1623, and is believed to be the son of Sir Richard Hoghton, who as we have learned in the previous chapter, founded Hoghton Tower. Most genealogical sources do not site Ralph‘s relationship to Sir Richard Hoghton, as most Eng-lish records show no such relationship. But one source does cite this father-son relationship as correct. Although Sir Ralph Houghton was reportedly knighted by King Charles I of England, Ralph chose to fight on the side of Cromwell. In 1638, to avoid both political and religious prosecution, it appears he fled to America.54 Ralph and his wife, Jane Stowe, arrived in Boston aboard the Abigail in 1647 on the same ship with his cousin John Houghton. Ralph and Jane also came with their two sons, Ralph and James. Ralph and was one of the four English settlers who signed the Lancaster Covenant in 1652. p. 50 [ no evidence; not on Abigail] Ralph Houghton died in his beloved state of Massachusetts on June 10, 1700, at the age of 77. p. 51 (wrong date) Ralph Houghton‘s son James Houghton (unknown-1711) married Mary Sawyer and lived most of his life in Lancaster. p. 51 (not Sawyer) Based upon the above defined DNA testing, the laboratory found that this author has a Paternal, DNA Haplogroup type called ?R1b.? Therefore, by finding the author‘s ge-netic codes, all Houghtons who are ancestors or descendants of me, like my son Ian or any Houghton in the world, will contain this same genetic markers or codes. The 29 generations of Houghtons over the past 1,000 years would all have the same Haplogroup R1b DNA. It is now possible to trace the same paternal DNA back to the beginning of modern man—some 90,000 years ago! (CJV: not true, other haplogroups, i.e. Ralph line is I1) Exploring the New World as two, cousins John and Ralph Houghton, set sail from England on the ship Abigail and settled in the Colony of Massachusetts in 1647 [Abigail sailed in 1635; only Joh age 4, from Eaton Bay to Dedham MA; no Ralph]

- Author: William Douglas Houghton was the author of The Memoirs of Orley Clifton Houghton by William D. Houghton
This short work contains the 40-page, memoirs of19th Century inventor and engineer Orley Clifton Houghton. The memoir was hand-written to his son Bruce Robertson Houghton, Sr. in the 1950s. Sadly, I believe that several pages of his autobiography have been lost or destroyed, as the document ends abruptly. It was meant to be a brief history of the heritage of the Houghton Farm in Wisconsin and an overview of Orley’s early work as an inventor, in designing and producing mechanized farm equipment. It certainly was never meant to be published, but just as an historical reference for his son. As one of Orley’s grandsons, I believe this document should be preserved and shared with future Houghton generations, as well as being a fascinating window into American 19th Century rural life. in 2009.4

Biography | William Houghton Archbishop of Dublin, date and place of birth unknown; d. at Dijon, 1298 ———— * Published by Encyclopedia Press, 1913. Houghton, WILLIAM (variously called DE HOTUM, DE HOTHUM, DE HOZUM, BOTHUM, DE HONDEN, HEDDON, HEDDONEM, according as his name was pronounced by those of different nationalities—in the ancient manuscripts of his order it is invariably written DE ODONE), Archbishop of Dublin, date and place of birth unknown; d. at Dijon, 1298. His great learning united to solid piety made him illustrious among the savants of his time, while his rare prudence in the management of affairs gave him no small distinction among the statesmen of the thirteenth century. It is not known in which convent in England he received the habit of St. Dominic—it is certain that he made his higher studies in the Convent of St. James in Paris—there he took his degrees and lectured with great success. In the general chapter of the order held in Vienna in 1282, he was chosen Provincial of England, and discharged the duties of this office with zeal and ability. His contemporaries all speak of a uniform sweetness and a singular charm and distinction of manner which won for him at once love and respect. He governed the English province for five years, when he was recalled to Paris to resume his public lectures on theology. His ability was recognized by the court of France, especially by the king, Philip IV. But the English Dominicans wished him to return home, and they elected him provincial, which office he filled for a term of seven years. He became a favorite of King Edward I, and received many marks of royal affection and esteem. Edward I sent Houghton to Rome as ambassador to propose to the Holy Father his royal desire to assist his Holiness in affording help to the Christians in the Holy Land. The king proposed the conditions of the Holy Siege and he did this through his minister, William Houghton, who was favorably received at Rome and obtained nearly all that he desired. He returned to England with a Brief from Nicholas IV, dated Rome, November 10, 1289. The See of Dublin had become vacant by the death of Archbishop John de Sandford. Thomas Chat-worth, the successor named by the chapter, was not acceptable to the king, so the see remained vacant from Oct—1294, to June, 1297. Edward I appealed to Pope Boniface VIII requesting the appointment of William Houghton. This wish was granted and Houghton was consecrated at Ghent by Anthony Beck, Bishop of Durham, in 1297. A bloody war was raging between France and England and the two monarchs, Philip IV of France and Edward I of England, were brought by the prudent mediatorship of Houghton to conclude a treaty of peace for two years. In 1298, Edward I sent Houghton to Boniface VIII as a legate to acquaint his Holiness with the conclusion of the treaty of peace. Having been received by the sovereign pontiff (June 20, 1298) Houghton set out for England but on the way fell sick at Dijon (France) and died there August 28, 1298. By command of Edward I the remains were brought to London and laid in the Church of the Friars Preachers. Notwithstanding the important public offices Houghton filled, he found time to write the following works: "Commentarii in Sententiarum Libros", "De immediata visione Dei tractatus", "De unitate formarum Tractatus" "Lecturae Scholastae", and a speech in French on the rights of the English king. Note | 2015 | The History of Houghton Surname Research by Charles J. Vella, PhD (C) Dr. Douglass Houghton (1810-1845): Michigan geologist who compiled an unpublished list of English Houghtons circa 1825. Joseph Willard (1798-1865): Topographical and historical sketches of the town of Lancaster 1826, (Lancaster MA): First to erroneously report John and Ralph Houghton of Lancaster MA as "cousins". A theory disproved by current DNA evidence. Jason Houghton (1768-1843): Wrote a Lineage of the Houghton Family circa 1828 Houghton Association (1846-1868): The original Houghton Association was created circa 1846 and lasted until 1855. It was then reorganized in 1868 and later dissolved circa 1870. The purpose of the association was to collect information relative to unclaimed Houghton property in England, reported to belong to the Houghton family in America. Clearly a get rich scheme. There were three meetings of the Houghton Association: one at Winchendon, MA, on Apr. 21, 1868, one at Groton, June 3, 1869 and at Milton, June 5, 1869. Columbus Smith spoke at two of them. About 220 Members paid $5 in 1868 to join the Houghton association hoping to receive $200 in any recovered property. Fisher Rice, agent of the Association, interviewed Judge Jacob Houghton, who refused to join, but gave him an introduction to Sir Henry Bold Hoghton Bt in England. While John Wesley Houghton mentions it's history in his genealogy, he had nothing to do with the Association. Fisher M. Rice (1847): The Houghton Association: report of the agent to England. Imprint: New York: Jared W. Bell, printer, 1848. Available at Higginson Books. Francis W. Houghton (1835-1911) : Houghton Memorial, 1869 Compiled descendants of Jason and Caty Houghton, of the Ralph Houghton line. 670 descendants of Ralph Houghton's line were published in Columbus Smith's 1869 Report to the Houghton Association. This consititutes the first published genealogy of the Houghton family. Columbus Smith (1869): Report to the Houghton Association, 1869 (author; relied heavily on Francis W. Houghton's data; he wrote 8 other family surname reports) Josiah Houghton (1800-1861): Wrote a genealogy of John Houghton of Lancaster MA, after supposedly spending a fortune in getting family records and history to enable him to claim and secure property in England. Rev. Royal and Cecelia Houghton (1868): Wrote a diary that contains information about their Houghton family. David Anthony Keizer (1857- ): History and Genealogy of the Houghton Family, the descendants of Capt. Timothy Houghton who emigrated to Nova Scotia: 1896 This is the second published Houghton genealogy. John Wesley Houghton in his 1912 Houghton Genealogy, Almira White in her White Genealogy, as well as Marshall McClanahan in his 1957 Houghton genealogies, all used the data first compiled and published by David A. Keizer in his 1896 genealogy of the Canadian descendants of Capt. Timothy Houghton of Massachusetts. Keizer noted that he had read H. S. Nourse's Early Records of Lancaster, MA, as well as his Lancaster MA BMD Records, and his Military Annals of Lancaster MA. He also read J. Willard's Sketches of Lancaster MA of 1826. He erroneously believed John Houghton the Emigrant of Lancaster MA was the John, age 4/40 of the "Abigail". He includes 1852 descendants of Capt. Timothy Houghton. Available at Higginson Books. Charles Edward Church (1835-) & Ernest Percy Webber (1874-): D. Keizer' Genealogy of the Houghton Family. 1896 above is misattributed to both of these individuals in several references; (see "The Sedition Trial of Timothy Houghton" by Barry Cahill; Mr. Cahill gives C.E. Church as compiler of Keizer's work) Henry Stedman Nourse (1831-1903): Early Records of Lancaster MA (1884) Lancaster MA VRs (1890) Lancasteria (1900) Includes many early Houghton vital records; He was a John Houghton of Lancaster, MA descendant. Almira Larkin White (1900): Genealogy of the Descendants of John White of Wenham and Lancaster, Massachusetts, 3 volumes,1900-1905 Compiled many early Houghtons Caroline Keyes Houghton Squires (1852-): The Houghton Family by Thaddeus William Harris: Handwritten genealogy copied from manuscripts belonging to Mrs Caroline K. Houghton Squires, daughter of Simon W. Houghton to whom these papers originally belonged. Daniel Merrick Wheeler (1846-): He wrote a genealogy of the Whitingham VT Houghtons: 1903 John Barber White (1909):: Descendants of John Barber of Worcester, Mass., 1714-1909, 1909 Includes a number of early Ralph Houghton descendants Dr. John Wesley Houghton (1834-1924): Houghton Genealogy. Descendants of Ralph and John Houghton, 1912 The third published Houghton genealogy, considered by many as the Houghton Genealogy. Very few place references; compiled from Houghtons sending him data; no citations. Many errors. But an outstanding job for a pre-computer age genealogist. While he reported the English Houghtons, he disavowed the "Ralph is Radcliffe of English De Hoghton ancestry theory". He was a Ralph Houghton descendant. He listes 8350 Houghton descendants.J. W. Houghton obviously used Francis W. Houghton's material (esp. British ancestry) of 1869. Available at Higginson Books. Arthur Wellington Clark (1850-): Author of an unpublished genealogy of the Houghton Family circa 1900; Dr. JWH offered to co-author the Houghton Genealogy with him; critical of JWH, lists corrections. John Calvin Lawrence Clark (1871): A famous New England historian; he researched the Houghtons with Dr. Harris A. Houghton. Annie Lane Burr and Thomas Hovey Gage (1925): John Houghton of Lancaster, Mass., and some of his descendants, 1925 (first and only NEGHR publication of a Houghton line). The 4th published Houghton genealogy. Dr. Harris Ayers Houghton (1874-1946): Houghton researcher before 1930 (used many county histories). His work is in the Chicago SAR Library. McClanahan attributes his genealogy of the Houghton family as being "from early Harris Ayres Houghton data", as well as stating "Possibly Dr. Frederic L. Weis used his data in his Early Families of Lancaster, Mass." Clarence Winthrop Bowen, Ph.D. (1852-): History of Woodstock, CT, c 1930 Lists some Houghton lines in Connecticut Luella Houghton (1879-1945): She wrote a 32 page Houghton genealogy of her family, "We Houghtons and our beloved Shed-Members", 1938. The 5th published Houghton genealogy. Mrs. Fred (Lillie) Brandt: Descendants of Eleazer Houghton 1690-1790 and his wife Elizabeth (Divoll) Houghton 1693-1784, 1964 Compiled and self published the Illinois descendants of Eleazer Houghton (87 pages). The 6th published Houghton genealogy. Available at Newbery Library in Chicago. Rev. Frederick Lewis Weis (1941): Early Families of Lancaster MA, 1941 Compiled 7 generations of John Houghton descendants (40 pages) and several generations of Ralph Houghton (7 pages); no citations; relied heavily on Burr and Hovey; appears to have used Nourse's Lancaster MA VRs data. William DeLoss Love II (1888- ): Descendants of Capt. William Houghton and Marilla Clay, 1953. The 6th published Houghton genealogy. Available at Higginson Books. Vivian Imogene Morgan Uran (1891-1970): Houghton Genealogy, 1954 A Ralph Houghton descendant, through her mother, Lydia May Houghton. She wrote a 500 page compilation of her Houghton ancestry to Ralph Houghton. (She was the author's wife Marilyn's grandmother; Her genealogy started the author's interest in Houghton research). Edna Florine Houghton (1892-1980): Compiled the Houghton Genealogy of the descendants of Deacon Jason Houghton, of Ralph Houghton line. Norman Wiley Carpenter (1921-1959): He compiled a genealogy of the descendants of Elijah Houghton in 1955. Marshall Loring McClanahan (1904-1990): John & Beatrix (Joselyn) Houghton of Lancaster, Massachusetts, & some of their Descendants, c. 1957 Ralph and Jane (Stowe) Houghton of Lancaster, Massachusetts, & some Descendants. Considered the second major Houghton genealogy; an unpublished manuscript; One of the first to use vital record citations; clearly duplicated JWH and Weis, used Harris A Houghton; but multiple typos of dates; many misquoting of pages in VRs citations. He clearly read Rev. Royal Houghton's diary. He includes a total of 8568 Houghton descendants (Ralph line, 3204 individuals and John line , 5364 individuals). Rosamond Nadine VanNoy (1922- ): A Houghton Family from Ralph Houghton of Lancaster MA., 1652 to Rosamond Houghton VanNoy of Conover, WI, 1992: A genealogy of the Broome Co. NY Houghtons, descendants of Otis Houghton. The 7th published Houghton genealogy. (includes 217 individuals) Barbara Marie Houghton, L. M. Griggs, Vanchie P. Houghton, J. Smith, B. It is based on the 1912 Houghton Genealogy data focusing on the early English Houghtons, and his own family, the descendants of William Houghton of Wisconsin. He again restates and accepts the "Ralph and John are cousins" and the "John & Ralph Houghton of Lancaster were on the Abigail" theories. But it is interesting read about some interesting Houghtons and he does have great pictures. Dr. Charles J. Newspaper | Sep 21, 1971 | New York, New York Co., NY, USA, NY Times: Wife slain, Washington lawyer held Washington, Sept. 20 -- A member of a socially prominent Washington family was killed last night at the family estate in suburban McLean, Va., and her estranged husband has been charged with murder. Katherine Pollars Maddux Houghton, 26 years old, was shoot to death, the police said today. The body was found by policemen answering a call from a relative. Her husband, Alfred Ballentine Houghton, 28, a lawyer for the District of Columbia, was arrested early today at his mother's home in the Spring Valley section of Washington. he is being held for the authorities of Fairfax County, Va., who have charged him with murder. At an arraignment today he was ordered held for 30 days by District authorities while he undergoes a mental examination. He is to be returned to court Oct. 19 to face proceedings seeking his extradition to Virginia. Mrs. Houghton was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cabell Maddux Jr., who were on an extended tour of Europe when the shooting occurred. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Richard J. Alfaro, former president of Panama and forer vice president of the World Court. She also was a first cousin of the entertainer Nancy Ames. Mr. Houghton, formerly an employee in the trust department of a Washington bank, joined the staff of the District of Columbia Corporation Counsel in July. He was assigned to a special litigation division that handles, among other things, family and mental-health cases. The Fairfax County police said the shooting had apparently followed a series of arguments between the couple. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton, who had no children, had been separated for about a year. They were married in 1966.3 |

Research | Korman v. Carpenter, Virginia Supreme Court, June 13, 1975 JAMES W. KORMAN, ADMINISTRATOR, ETC. v. ARTHUR J. CARPENTER, JR., COMMITTEE, ETC: On September 19, 1971, appellee's ward, Alfred B. Houghton, fatally shot his wife, appellant's decedent, Katherine Pollard Maddux Houghton. On his plea of guilty Houghton was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to serve twenty years in the penitentiary. At the time of the homicide the parties, although not divorced, were living separate and apart, having prior thereto executed a separation and property settlement agreement. Mrs. Houghton was survived by her husband, both parents and two brothers. The administrator of the decedent's estate brought an action for wrongful death on behalf of Mrs. Houghton's parents and brothers against Houghton's committee. In his motion for judgment the administrator made no claim of economic loss and sought only damages for solace. Houghton's committee demurred on the ground that no action could be maintained under Virginia's Wrongful Death Act (Code § 8-633) since Mrs. Houghton would not have been able to maintain an action for assault against her husband had she lived. The trial court sustained the demurrer, relying upon Keister's Adm'r v. Keister's Ex'ors, 123 Va. 157, 96 S.E. 315 (1918), and the administrator has appealed.

Biography | Lieutenant Colonel Jean Houghton, USA (Ret.) A native of Boston and a graduate of St. Margaret's Hospital School of Nursing in Dorchester, Jean Houghton is the daughter and sister of Navy veterans. However, Lt. Col. Jean Houghton broke with family tradition and opted to serve her country by enlisting in the Army. Though Lt. Col. Houghton served in Korea after the War, she saw plenty of action during the Korean Revolution in 1959 and 1960, which provided excellent preparation for front line nursing in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. During her 28 years of service, Lt. Col. Houghton did, indeed, "see the world," with tours of duty in Germany, France, and Japan, in addition to Korea, and Vietnam. Stateside, the Lt. Col. served in various locations west of the Mississippi, with a final assignment at Fort Devins in Massachusetts. A model of Yankee ingenuity, Lt. Col. Houghton enjoyed the challenge of adapting, improvising, and creating equipment in the difficult and restricted conditions of war. Home at last, she provides a family anchor for her 10 nieces and nephews and fifteen great nieces and nephews. |

Biography | Liz Houghton Cunha, 2012: Dad is dealing with dementia & is really disoriented. I knew he would be messed up after spending a month up here in Massachusetts. He has been home in Florida for 3 weeks now, anyway,he is at the point where he still remembers the past. Through the years he has told us many stories of his childhood(boy what a movie this disfuntional family would make) You have all the information that I know of concerning dad's side of the family. We honestly didn't know about his 1/2 brothers & sisters from Florida until 10 or so years ago and dad was not one to speak much about them. He was very emotional about the situation. He, Virginia & Jean were all scarred from the scandal that his father brought them into. They remember the fights of Florence & Casco concerning Amy and was ridiculed all through their school years..you see...Amy was a school teacher in the city of Boston & was having an affair & a child (children) out of wedlock. The school actually changed their rules because of her.
