Manley H. Houghton, 82, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at his residence. He was born Aug. 19, 1915, at Hot Springs, the son of Ray and Dora Houghton. He attended schools in Rapid City, and graduated from
high school in Sioux City, Iowa. After high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in Arkansas. He worked at the State Soldiers Home in Hot Springs and in Rapid City for Mills Drug, D&H Garage, and Brown Swiss Dairy. Manley attended South Dakota School of Mines & Technol- ogy from 1939 to 1941. He then worked at Boeing in Seattle and Northrup in Los Angeles. In 1947, he returned to Rapid City and was a materials engineer for the South Da- kota Highway Department until retirement in January 1981. He married Bernice Johnson on Feb. 9, 1955. She preceded him in death in January of 1980. He married Pearl French on Oct. 15, 1982
He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as an officer of the congrega- tion and on various boards, and a member of Canyon Lake and Minne- luzahan senior centers. Golden Age Club, Elks Lodge No 1187, and he was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife. Pearl Houghton, of Rapid City; a stepson, Donald French, and his wife, Diana, of Fort Collins, Colo; three step- daughters, Toni Friesen and her husband, Charles, of Santa Fe, N.M., Vickie Leger of Westminster, Colo., and Mary Lou Paxton and her hus- band, Stan, of Houston; eight stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sis- ter, his parents and his first wife Bernice.
