He came to the United States on 8 May 1888, leaving his wife and their six children to follow him in April, 1892. They moved to Sanborn, Wisconsin, by at least 1893, as their son Carl was born in Sanborn on 30 January 1893. They still lived in Sanborn at the time of their daughter Ida’s marriage in 1905. On 1 January 1920, August, a 65 year old widower lived on a farm on Swede Pine Road in White River Township. Ashland County, Wisconsin. He had become a naturalized US citizen in 1906. His married daughter Ellen V. Lundberg, 31, and single sons Carl. O., 26 and Walfred V., 19, lived with him and helped on the farm. Also farming on adjacent farms on Swede Pine Road were the Henry H. Hagstrom, the Warner A. Hagstrom, the John Hagstrom and the Frank Shefchik families.

The only Hässles I can find in Sweden are 1) a builtup area in Uppsala län, near Stockholm, 2) a builtup area in Lessebo, Kronoberg län, 3) a manor in Enköping in Uppsala län, 4) a manor in Katrineholm, Södermanland län.
