Edward was a graduate of Yale College in 1823, and became a lawyer in Amherst and Representative, Senator, Counsellor, and Representative in Congress.
®656 On 1 June 1850 he was a 45 year old lawyer in Amherst with real estate valued at $3000. His wife Emily, 43, and their three single children, William A., a 21 year old school teacher, Emily E., 19 and Lavina (sic), 17 lived with him. On 1 June 1860 Edward was a 57 year old lawyer in Amherst with real estate valued at $7400 and a personal estate valued at $12000. Emily, 56, Emily E., 29, Lavinia, 27 and Margaret O’Brien, a 30 year old immigrant Irish servant lived with him. William and his family lived in the adjacent house. On 1 June 1870 Edward is a 67 year old lawyer in Amherst with real estate valued at $15000 and a personal estate valued at $15000. He lived with Emily, 65, Emily E., 38, Lavinia, 36 and 2 female servants. In the house next door lived his son William and his family.
