He was born on 4 September 1905 at Collingwood Twp., Grey County, Ontario, Canada, according to Ontario Birth Registration 219806.7,3,5,4,6 George married Irene Elizabeth Abell on 2 September 1935 at Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada.9,10,11,6
George Clare White died on 5 April 1986 at Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada, at age 80.8,6
George Clare White was buried at Maitland Cemetery, Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada.6
He was commonly known as Clare.12
George Clare White appeared in the 1911 Canadian Census of Collingwood Twp., Grey County, Ontario in the household of his parents, Thomas and Harriet M. White.5
The following biographical information was shared at the White family narrative by George "Clare" White, March 1979:
I was 22 years of age when I completed "Honour Matriculation". Of necessity we all had to earn money during our school years to continue or return to school. Father was seriously ill at home for one full year, without any income or savings. We four children earned about $2,000.00 that year. During my school years I worked in the logging camp, sawmill, planing mill, wood turning factory and went west on Harvest Excursions in 1922 (16-17 years old) and 1923. The latter were grand experiences -- dawn to dark work at $6.00 a day and board. I saved $300.00 in 1923.

During 1922 and 1923 in Saskatchewan, I met and visited all of our "John Johnston" 1st and 2nd cousins. Frances Elizabeth Johnston (my aunt) died at 50 years of age; their four daughters reached their nineties; two survive - Ethel in her 97th year and Rhoda in her 91st. Mabel's husband, Doctor Alex E. Elliott, a retired Methodist and United Church minister and farmer was 100 years old on February 7, 1979. His book "The Days of the Years of My Pilgrimage" compiled at the age of 96, is a poignant account of their lives on the Canadian prairies. My latest from him is a 350-word handwritten letter dated March 12, 1979. Our daughter Elizabeth and we visited Rhoda in Vancouver General Hospital last August. She was quite mobile with a walker and very concerned about the other patients - being the nurse that she was and her mother's daughter. She and I had a wonderful time ~ the Blue Mountain, Kolapore, the Mill, the Church, the School, Uncle John, Dad, mother, Muriel and many others.

I was employed in Toronto for almost 37 years - a few months with Coca Cola and over 36 years as a tax auditor with the Federal Government. The change of jobs was the shrewdest act of my life. It was not long before I was attracted to a certain spunky, vivacious, brown-eyed private secretary. Irene and I have had almost 44 years of the good life together, including over 14 years in Goderich, her home town.

We have hardly a pain nor an ache and notice this morning a newspaper item about Tommy Douglas, sometime Premier of Saskatchewan, on his 75th birthday and approaching his retirement from Parliament. He is quoted as saying

"I feel in first-class shape and I could still box one or two rounds - I think if I got some guy small enough and weak enough."

We are kindred spirits.

Our children and their families are our pride and joy -- no problems, health or otherwise. Sally, Peter, Elizabeth and Bob are graduates of the University of Toronto; John of York University. Peter and Bob are professional engineers. John is in his third year as an actor at Stratford (Ontario) Shakespearean Festival.12

Diary prompts quest to uncover facts about family
A chance buy at an auction has set a New Zealand woman off on quest to find out about the life and times of a Lincolnshire man.

And now Jeanette Chalmers is hoping Bygones readers can help with her research which began after she bought a diary belonging to a Thomas William White from an online auction in her home country.

"It has proved to be very interesting reading," said Jeanette.

And she sent us a number of facts from the diary which she hopes lead to further information about Mr White or his descendants.

She knows he was born on November 2, 1854. to George Patchett White and Eliza White, possibly in the Ludborough, Laceby or Louth area. His grandmother was Elizabeth Hobson and he had an Uncle Thomas White and an aunt Elizabeth White.

His siblings were:

Stephen brother, who got engaged to a Miss Hoyland in June 1870

Thomas - brother

William - brother

John Hobson - brother

Elizabeth Jane - sister, born May 15, 1850.

Joe brother (JT?) born July 13, 1851

Lizzie - Elizabeth Eva - sister, born Sunday morning January 23. 1853. She died from a progressive illness late in the evening of July 17, 1872.

Tillie (sister Matilda?).

MA (Tillie/Matilda? - born November 14, 1856.

An entry in the diary on June 1, 1870 confirms Thomas William White went to Sam Cresswell's School as did several other of his siblings. On September 21, 1870 he started at Mr J J Larders as an apprentice - mixing and grinding teas? Selling sugar?

The diary also recorded that on September 16, 1872 a new Sunday School had opened and the minister was Mr Bainbridge.

An entry for June 3, 1873 records, Good Templar's Lodge; Became Charter Member of this New Lodge along with other siblings. Name of Lodge: The Alliance No 2992.12,6

The following biographical information was shared at the family tree database of Merrie Rue Smith, 24 November 2000:
THE LANGDALE FAMILY JOIN THE JACKSONS
Thomas Langdale (1767-1837) and wife, Elizabeth Hill (1778-1838), were born in Yorkshire, England. They grew up, married, and had their family of nine children in England. They moved to America around 1828, while their family was still young and settled on Georgetown Ridge.

Early records of this proud aristocratic family are sparse. Their family was well educated. Their first son, John, was a minister, but died at age 32. Two others were medical doctors.

Isabell Langdale married Rueben Christophy Jackson (1810-1887) on March 31, 1838. Isabelle Langdale was born abt.1816 in Cowsby Co., York, England and came to America with her parents and family when she was 12 years old.

Another brother, Robert Hill Langdale (1808-1878) married Mary Corbin Jackson and their five children all married local companions.

This Langdale Family was buried in the Jackson Family burying ground on Georgetown Ridge and today, 1975, it is known as the Jackson Langdale Graveyard.

Frances B. Langdale b. 11-26-1834 d. 5-12-1910 married Francis (Frank) Marion Jackson on May 22, 1861. Francis Marion Jackson b. 8-10-1831 d. 11-8-1899 was the son of Enoch Winchester Jackson, Esquire and Elizabeth White.
Frances and Frank had two children: Laura Bell Jackson b. 1-21-1861 d. March 21, 1964 and Elizabeth Jackson b. 2-28-1862 d. ???.

Louise Langdale married Thomas B. Cottingham of Bright, Dearborn Co., IN. and they later owned 160 acres of the original Jackson property. Later known as the Langdale Farm and at present (1975), the Howard and Lizzie Cottingham Farm.

Jane Hill Langdale, b. 9-29-1834 d. 7-10-1884, sister of Robert Hill Langdale and daughter of Thomas Langdale married Enoch Blasdel Nowlin on April 7, 1859. Enoch Blasdel Nowlin b. 4-15-1832 in Dearborn, IN d. 6-17-1894 was the son of Jeremiah H. Nowlin and Pamelia Blasdel. Jane and Enoch had four children: Harry Langdale Nowlin, Mary Pamelia Nowlin, Robert Jeremiah Nowlin, and Anna Lena Nowlin. (Information regarding children secured from http://www.calweb.com)

Another Langdale brother married Bell Megrew of Bright, Dearborn Co., IN.

I know there were 2 ministers and 4 or 5 medical doctors. Very good ones, too.
