One form in his service file notes that he enlisted Nov 12, 1914. His medical examination occurred in Ottawa in Dec. 1914, joining the 2nd Divisional Signal Company, No. 184.

He arrived in the United Kingdom on May 24, 1915 on the S.S. Megantic. He embarked for France September 14, 1915.

Eric was in hospital a couple of times and was invalided to England Dec. 15, 1915 where he joined (taken on strength) the Canadian Engineers (C.E.) Training Depot..^1,6,7
     On 20 May 1916, at Shorncliffe Army Camp, Kent, England, he was promoted to sergeant, having risen through the ranks of Lance Corporal (Dec 15, 1915 in one record and Mar. 2, 1916 in another), 2^nd Corporal (Apr 19, 1916) and Corporal (May 5, 1916.)¹
     On between 13 November 1916 and 18 May 1917, at Crowborough Camp, Sussex, England, he was cycled "On Command" and "Off Command" but I'm not sure what that entailed.

By Mar 19, 1917 he had been appointed a Provisional Lieutenant, and on May 18, 1917 he was appointed Temporary Lieutenant.

Finally, he was transferred to the Royal Flying Corp (R.F.C.) on April 15, 1917, and he was seconded for duty with the R.F.C on June 11, 1917. He was "To be Flying Officer, (Observer)" with seniority from June 4, 1917.

In another document in his service file, it reports that he had been posted to France as a reinforcement to the R.F.C. on June 3, and attached to the 100 Squadron on June 4, 1917.¹
