Family Background:
     Four of William Lake, Sr's sons enlisted and served during WWI. Three served in France; William, Thomas and Ingram. William was wounded several times, most seriously at Passchendaele. Thomas died in the trenches. George joined the Imperial Forces in England rather than the CEF.
Other comments:
     One has to wonder if Ingram suffered from shell-shock, today's Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and whether it was a factor in his later suicide.⁸

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Pte. Ingram Lake began military service on 26 March 1915 at the age of 29 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 53rd Battalion C.E.F. He was a married farmer. He was described as being 5' 5" with black hair, brown eyes and dark hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his wife, Cecily May Lake of Asquith. He was assigned regimental number 440283.^1,4
     On 29 March 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit sailed for Liverpool, England on the "S.S. Empress of Britain" arriving on 09 Apr 1916.⁴
     On 15 April 1916, he was hospitalized twice during the war. First for tonsillitis (Apr 15, 1916) and then for trench fever (May 22, 1917.) After this he was assigned to the Canadian Army Pay Corps. He went over to France 13 Aug 1916 joining the 56th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.⁴
     On 11 July 1919, embarked for Canada on the "S.S. Cedric" for demobilization.⁴ A/Sgt. Ingram Lake ended military service as part of general demobilization on 26 July 1919 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, after serving in Canada, England and France. He intended to return to Asquith, Saskatchewan.

     Ingram Lake appeared on the 1901 British Census of at England, Durham County, in the household of his father William Lake, listed as a coal miner.² Ingram Lake emigrated with 3 of his brothers and their father, William Lake Sr. on 24 March 1904 from Liverpool, Lancashire, England. They were from Homeside, County Durham, England; to Canada, landing at Halifax. They sailed on the "Bavarian." They came from Homeside, County Durham, England.⁹
     Ingram and Cecily Lake appeared on the 1911 Canadian Census of Saskatchewan, Township 37, enumerated 5 June 1911. Ingram was described as a farmer. Their children Cecily Ann and Frederick I were listed as living with them.⁵
