     Thomas Arthur Wells applied for a homestead at NE part of 32-49-18+W3 in the RM of Parkdale 498 on 12 Jun 1907, but did not subsequently secure a patent on it. When he enlisted in Saskatoon in Mar 1916, he gave his address as Asquith. At that time he was a miner by occupation.
Analysis:
     I have been unable to find references to Thomas after his discharge. A man by that name died in BC in 1938, but he was not a native of England, so is not the object of this sketch.²

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Thomas Arthur Wells of Asquith began military service on 7 March 1916 at the age of 20 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, joining the 65th Overseas battalion. He was an unmarried miner. He was described as being 5' 4" with a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Joseph Wells c/o Mr. Joseph Waugh, Back Orde Street, Gatehead-on-Tyne, England. He was assigned regimental number 474129.¹
     On 18 June 1916, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, his unit sailed for England on the "S.S. Empress of Britain" arriving in Liverpool 8 days later on the 28th. He was transferred to the 65th Battalion.¹
     On 14 August 1916, he joined the 54th Battalion in France. On 29 Sep 1916 he was tried and convicted of neglecting to obey an order, and was sentenced to 21 days Field Punishment No. 1. (I'm not sure about Canadian punishments, but it was probably similar to the British in which a man was publically handcuffed or similarly attached to a fixed object such as a gun wheel or fence post for up to 2 hours per day.) In Jan 1917, he attended Lewis (Machine) Gun training. On 31 May 1919, he embarked on "H.M.T.S. Mauretania."¹ Pte. Thomas Arthur Wells ended military service as part of general demobilization on 8 June 1919 at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. He planned to return to Asquith after his discharge.
