Other comments:
     Marius Granstom emigrated from Denmark in Feb 1910, to start a greenhouse business in Saskatoon. However, this enterprise was "hailed out." He must have spent time farming with his uncle Hans Larsen of R.R#1, Asquith, or farming nearby, since Asquith was his address at the time he enlisted. In the Asquith history, Fredrick Larson's biography mentions he worked for the same Hans Larsen. (note the differences in the suffix of their surnames.) In the 1916 census, Marius was boarding with the Hans Petersen family in the Asquith district and working as a farm labourer. He married in 1928 and shortly after, he bought the Virginia Park greenhouse business in Edmonton. He was still working there at the time of a 1989 article in the Edmonton Journal. By then, the business was being run by his son, Ray, who bought it in 1965. In July 2004, the business was closed to make way for a housing development.³

Canadian Military Service - WWI

     Marius Granstrom of Asquith began military service on 13 October 1917 at the age of 26 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, joining the #1 Training Depot Canadian Army Service Corps (C.S.A.C.) However, a May 1919 Medical History records that he enlisted 10 Oct 1917 in Saskatoon. He was an unmarried farmer with no previous military experience. He was described as being 5' 9" with blue eyes, dark brown hair and a dark complexion. On his Attestation (enlistment) papers, he listed his next-of-kin/contact as his father, Peter Granstrom of Balle, Bredsten, Denmark. He was assigned regimental number 2115711.¹
     On 21 February 1918, his unit sailed from Canada and arrived in England on 4 Mar 1918. (His service file does not record the place of embarkation.) On 22 May 1918, he joined the 52nd Battalion in France. Effective 01 Mar, 1918, he had arranged for the pay master to send $15 per month to his uncle Hans Larsen at R.R.#1, Asquith. This continued until 1 Feb 1919.¹
     On between 20 July 1918 and 25 July 1918, he was hospitalized with influenza.¹
     On 28 August 1918 on the Arras front, Pas de Calais, France, he received gun shot or shrapnel wounds to his right knee and thigh, resulting in a fractured femur. The day after his injury he had surgery to remove fragments and was put in a splint for three (3) months. He had some restriction on the range of motion of his knee following his recovery. At the age of 89, he was quoted in an Edmonton article as follows:

     "Aug. 28, 1918 my leg was shot up and they sent me back in a hospital ship" he said. "But they patched it together and riveted it and it works fine"

He remained in various hospitals until after 15 Apr 1919 when the medical history mentioned above was written in Moose Jaw.^1,3
     On 31 March 1919, at Liverpool, Lancashire, England, he was invalided to Canada arriving in Portland on the "S. S. Essequibo." His address for leave from Apr 15th to the 29th was given as Saskatoon.¹ Pte. Marius Granstrom ended military service as part of general demobilization on 19 May 1919 at Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and was classified as medically unfit due to wounds.

     He immigrated in February 1910 to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, from Denmark.⁴ He was included on a passenger manifest for the "Empress of Britain" dated 31 March 1921 arriving at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, from Liverpool, England. He was returning from a visit to see relatives in Denmark. He had departed from Montral in Dec 1920.⁴
