Letters by Luther Upton
Luther Upton, son of Robert Upton and Lucy Doyle, was born 16 March 1815 in Salem, Massachusetts. He married Helen Maria Bowditch, daughter of Joseph Bowditch and Lucinda Morse, on 29 September 1836 in Salem, and died in Lynn, Massachusetts, on 16 October 1879. His wife Helen was the sister of Elizabeth (Abbot) Bowditch's husband Joseph Henry Bowditch.
These letters were written to Luther's brother-in-law Joseph Henry Bowditch.
- 15 May 1856. To his wife's brother Joseph Henry Bowditch in Tarboro, North Carolina. He informs Joseph of the death in childbirth of Joseph and Helen's sister Sarah Morse (Bowditch) Abbot. [Transcription]

He describes the aftermath of the death of Joseph's sister Sarah, and it's affect on their mother Lucinda (Morse) Bowditch; proposes bringing her to live with them in Springfield; and asks for money to pay her expenses.
