He first appears in Connecticut in 1653, living in New London, then Fisher's Island, then New London again, where he was "one of the original proprietors in 1665."2 He seems to have been prominent in the construction of the First Congregational Church in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.2
In 1675/76 he and his sons Edmund, Thomas, and John fought in King Phillip's War. For their service, they received land grants in the "Cedar Swamp Lots."2
The settlement of his estate indicates that he had given most of his property to his four oldest sons, Edmund, Thomas, John, and William, and his daughter Mary, during his lifetime. The remainder was left to his widow Ellen and to his youngest son James.2
