He was a yeoman (i.e., farmer).1
In his father's will, dated 18 May 1650 and proved on 2 May 1651, he was left his father's messuage (i.e., house, barns, and outbuildings) in Bray, plus his cottages and other land in Bray. In return, Robert was to pay £100 to his (i.e., Robert's) brother William within two years of his father's death, and £20 to his brother John within three years.1
His own will was dated 15 February 1689/90 and proved on 16 February 1691/92. His estate was left to his son Robert, of Bray.1

He may have emigrated from England with his brother William on the Arbella as part of the Winthrop fleet, arriving in Salem, Massachusetts, on 14 June 1630.2 He was made a freeman there in August 1644.1
He reportedly lived in Malden, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, in 1648, although his first three children were baptized in Salem between 1644 and 1649.1
In his father's will, dated 18 May 1650 and proved on 2 May 1651, he was left £20 to be paid within one year, plus an additional £20 to be paid by his brother Robert within three years.1
About 1650 he moved to Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1 He served there as selectman and as an attorney, and was also elected as "quartermaster of the three Essex County troops."1 Court records for Lynn indicate that he traded in wood and timber.1 He was also licensed in 1652 to operate a "house of common entertainment," and the next year to "draw and sell strong waters."1
He was brought to court several times, often for incidents in his tavern. In 1657 he was fined for "suffering disorder in his house," having allowed people to drink to excess, and two to become drunk on several occasions. One witness testified "In one room was one Muzzy and his wife she sitting on one side of the table between two men and her husband on the other side, merrily singing to the rest." After the trial was over, Hathorne said some "contemptuous words against authority."1 In 1662, when his brother William was one of the judges, he was fined for refusing to help the marshal, calling him "a lying prating fool amd knave."1 In 1672 he was again in court, for fighting with Robert Potter, and was also charged with selling liquor to Indians. He denied the latter charge, "but apparently not very convincingly."1 Despite his legal troubles, his license was renewed each year, and was taken over by his widow after his death.1
His will was dated 19 October 1676 and proved on 26 March 1677 (French says 27 June 1677). His wife Sarah was left his entire estate for use during her lifetime. At her death, his house and land were to go to his sons Ebenezer and Nathaniel. His beds, linen, and utensils were divided between his sons and his daughters Marah and Phebe. His daughter Priscilla received 40s "as a remembrance of my love," and her daughter Phece received 20s. His wife Sarah and sone Ebenezer were named executors.1,3 His estate was inventoried at £263, and included several debts that were due him.1

He and his wife Agnes lived in Bray, Berkshire, England.1 He was a yeoman (i.e., a farmer who owned his own land), but was apparently among the higher class yeomen. All of his children married into families "of the minor gentry, of visitation standing."1
In 1586 (Davis mistakenly says 1580) he owned property in Bray called Wises at East Oakley, and Chambers and Bellows at Water Oakley, close to the Thames River.1,3 He was also a lessee of the 66-acre Queens Lease in Bray.1
He appears in the tax lists in Berkshire for 1585-86, 1592-93, 1596-97, 1600-01, and 1610-11, and in an undated list taken in the last decade of the reign of Elizabeth I. He was also one of the assessors for the last three of these lists.1 He served as a church officer from 1600 to 1602, and as a trustee for a church charity.1
His will was made 13 September 1620, and proved 1 July 1626. His wife Anne (the same as Agnes at that time) was left his house, other buildings, and all his land in Bray for as long as she remained unmarried, except for six acres. He listed in detail several items in his dwelling house, another house in Binfield, and various outbuildings, that were to be left "as standards."
To his sons Nathaniel and William he left 10s each, plus 5s each to William's children William, Anne, Joane, Elizabeth, and Robert. To his daughter Elizabeth Dellar he left £10, a cow, and two ewes and lambs, plus 5s each to her children Anne, Richard, Margaret, Elizabeth, Joane, and Jane. To his daughter Mary Bishop he left 10s, plus 5s each to her sons Robert and George. To his daughter Anne Winch he left 10s. To Richard, Joane, John, George, and Judith, the children of his daughter Joane Winch, he left 5s each. To each of his godchildren he left 12d. The overseers of his will were William Mountague amd his son-in-law George Bishop, who each were left 10s. Whatever remained was to go to his wife Anne, who was named executrix. He asked to be buried near his father in the Bray churchyard.1
His estate was inventoried on 22 June 1626 at £194 10d. Of this, the bees, poultry, and livestock were valued at £54 11s 1d. Other items included a Bible, other books, a halbert and sword, 18 silver spoons, and £30 in cash.1,3

She and her husband William lived in Bray, Berkshire, England.1 She was executrix of her husband's will, dated 13 September 1620 and proved 1 Jul 1626, and was left his house, other buildings, and all his land in Bray for as long as she remained unmarried, except for six acres. She also received whatever remained after his other legacies.1
Her own will was made 25 July 1626, and proved 14 March 1626/27. To her son William, she left the cupboard from her parlor, and farm carts, and to his daughter Anne she left her longest table cloth, a dozen napkins, and three pairs of sheets. To her daughter Elizabeth Dollar she left her best gown and kerchiefs. To her daughter Mary Bishop, she left her best saddle cloth. To each of her grandchildren, except for those godchildren who had already received one, she left a silver spoon. To her other godchildren she left 12d each. To each of her two servants she left 5s. The remainder was left to her son Nathaniel, and to her sons-in-law George Bishopp, Richard Winche, and Ricahrd Deller, who were named executors. She asked to be buried near her husband, and that 60 dozen loaves of bread be distributed to the poor in Bray on the day of her funeral.1,2

French, in the NEHGR of July 1913, says that Joan Hathorne married Richard Winch. However, a complaint filed after her death by her children's guardian Richard Winch in 1619, published in the NEHGR in July 1925, refer to her as a widow in June 1618, and to "Robert Winch, her late husband, then deceased." The will of her father William, made in 1620, refers to his daughter Anne Winch. And the will of her mother Anne Hathorne, made in 1626, refers to her son-in-law Richard Winche. This shows that Joan Hathorne married Robert Winch, not Richard, and that Richard (Robert's brother?) was instead the husband of Joan's sister Anne Hathorne.2,3
Her will was made 27 or 28 Feb 1618/19. She left specific legacies totaling £983, including £10 to each of her six children. Whatever remained was to go to her brothers Nathaniel and William Hathorne, who were named executors. This will was later challenged in court by Richard Winch, the guardian of her children (and brother of her late husband Robert Winch?), who claimed that Nathaniel and William Hathorne had defrauded the children out of nearly half of the estate, which he valued at about £2100.3
