He graduated from Harvard Preparatory School in Los Angeles, California, about 1941.5 Vision problems prevented him from attending the U.S. Naval Academy like his father and brothers, so he enrolled at Princeton University in Princeton, Mercer Co., New Jersey, where he majored in public and international affairs and graduated after three years, in 1944. He played football at Princeton, and was a member of the Tower Club.5,7
After graduation he entered the U.S. Marine Corps as a second lieutenant, undergoing officer training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He landed at Okinawa in June 1945, and on his second day there was hit twice by Japanese sniper fire. According to his brother Lynde, the first shot luckily hit him in the belt, saving his life, but the second shattered his thigh bone. He spent a year in rehab at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, and walked with a limp the rest of his life.5
After his release he entered law school at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, graduating in 1950.7 He began his law career at the Navy General Counsel Office in Washington, D.C. After twelve years he joined General Dynamics in Pomona, Los Angeles Co., California, as vice president in charge of contracts. Ten years later he moved back to Washington, and to federal service, with the General Services Administration.5
