John Cotton was born on 4 December 1585 in Derby, Derbyshire, England.1,2 He was the son of Rowland Cotton and Mary Hurlbert.2 John Cotton married first Elizabeth Horrocks before 1612.2 John Cotton married second Sarah Hawkridge, daughter of Anthony Hawkridge and Isabel Dowse, before 3 October 1632.1,2 John Cotton died on 23 December 1652 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, at age 67.1,2 His estate was probated on 27 January 1652/53.2
