George I, elector of Hanover, succeeded to the British throne on the death of Queen Anne in 1714. The succession was determined by the Act of Settlement of 1701, which passed over the legitimate but Roman Catholic representatives of the Stuart line in favor of the Protestant house of Hanover, descended from the daughter of James I. George quarreled both with his wife, Sophia Dorothea (1666-1726), whom he divorced and incarcerated (from 1694 until her death) in punishment for her alleged infidelity, and with his son, Prince George, who consorted with his political opponents. The prince succeeded to the throne as George II when George I died on June 12, 1727. Died of stroke.
