James Stewart
M, b. March 1862, d. 11 August 1933
James Stewart was born in March 1862 at Scotland. He was the son of James Stewart and Catherine Grant. James Stewart married Martha Dale, daughter of William Dale and Martha Henderson, on 7 June 1888 at Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, USA; Paterson, NJ.1,2 James Stewart died on 11 August 1933 at Kings County Hospital, Kings, New York, USA, at age 71. He was buried after 11 August 1933 at Evergreen Cemetary, Kings, New York, USA.
James Stewart lived at 660 Maple Street, Brooklyn, New York, USA. He "James Stewart was about the same age as Martha Dale (b. 1865), and as f ar
as my mother Mary Ethel knows, was also born in Dundee, Scotland. He di ed
about 1933 in Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, of stomach cancer, and is
buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn. Martha Dale (d. 1958) is buried
there, and probably other Stewart family members, as well.
My mother is not sure when James and Martha moved from Paterson, New
Jersey. James was an ironworker, who worked on various sites in the New
York City area, first from their home in Paterson, then from
Brooklyn. She remembers hearing that he worked on the Flatiron Buildi
and the Williamsburg Bridge in New York, completed 1902 and 1903. It w
on the Greenpoint Theater job in Brooklyn that he lost his arm. We don
have a date for that, but guess that it must have been about 1908, becau se
my grandmother Martha Stewart had to get a job when her father could no
longer work. She was under age, probably about 14 years old (beginni
life-long pattern of "adjusting" her age as it suited her needs!). My
mother is certain that they were living at 660 Maple Street, Brookly
that time.
Regarding the information from the Scots Ancestry Research Society,
we always heard that William and Martha Dale came to the United Stat es in
March 1888, during the great blizzard, with Martha and Maggie. They lov ed
telling this story - I heard it often from my grandmother, and probably
from Great Grandma or Aunt Maggie at least once or twice. The older
children had emigrated earlier, settling in Paterson, where they could fi nd
work in the silk mills. This probably accounts for the gap between Mary
and Archibald as to the other children during the 1881 Dundee censu
mother never heard of Helen, but remembers Mary, Jean, Arnold, and of
course, Martha and Maggie. We both remember being told that there we re 13
children, but it's not clear if all of them survived. Mom couldn't reca ll
any others by name, although Archibald and Robert seemed likely. Helen
birth entry cites 5 living children (including Helen?) in 1855. So if
Helen is part of our family, we can count 11 or 12 children, adding the
Arnold, and Jean to the youngest 4 of their children on the 1881 lis t. My
mother mused that maybe the total included "The Sailor." I guess Mart
and James took an itinerant sailor into the family when they were livi ng in
Paterson. It may be that he is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, along with
the family. No doubt you noted the discrepancies in William's and Martha 's
ages between the 1881 census data and Helen's birth entry.
What is also unclear is where Martha and James were married. Apparentl
he came to the United States first, then went back for Martha and her
family. Since there is no marriage record in Scotland, perhaps they wait ed
until they arrived in the United States, probably Paterson. Mom has phot os
of them together in Dundee, but no wedding photos at all."

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Edward Carwile on October 31, 2022, at the age of 80. Stephen was born February 6, 1942, in Washington DC and grew up in Arlington, VA. Stephen was retired and enjoyed spending his time traveling, going to concerts and plays with his beloved wife.
Stephen was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend to many. He always had time for family and friends, he would go out of his way to ensure everyone in his life was taken care of. Stephen was the oldest of six children with five sisters he cherished and was known to them as Stevie.
Stephen was deeply passionate about his D.C. sports teams. He was an avid viewer of his Wizards, Nationals, Capitals and Commanders. When he was not watching his sports teams, he would be reading a book and had a fascination with history and historical events.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Christine Morin of Centreville, VA. His three children, Jason (Luz) Carwile, Patrick Carwile, and Amanda (Gene) Anderson. His grandchildren Kassandra, Rene, Jason Jr., Mason, Aubrey, Bella, Kayden, and Bryce. His siblings Nancy Harrison, Joann Zygmant, Kit Bucks, and Mary Sue Carwile. His nephews and nieces, and cousin. He is preceded by his Grandparents Ding and Kitty; his parents Sid and Dot; and his sister Dorrie.
Services will be held on, November 21, at St. James Catholic church in Falls Church, VA at 10 a.m. and his celebration of life will be held shortly after at the St. James reception area with a fully catered event to celebrate Stevie's life.
