Birth: Jan. 10, 1818
Death: Oct. 16, 1873

Democrat. Merchant. 15th Mayor of Milwaukee, two terms 1865-66. Born in Calverick, Columbia, NY, came to Milwaukee in 1855 at the age of 37 as agent for the Western Transportation Co. He was in charge of the steamboats carrying passengers and freight, to and from Buffalo, in connection with the New York Central Railroad. He was one of the founders of the Chamber of Commerce. He was chosen president in 1863 and 1864, served with such ability that he was elected mayor. He was an 1867 nominee for governor, and narrowly lost to Lucius Fairchild. After the election he retired from public life, and devoted himself to his transportation interests until failing health compelled him to retire. He died after a painful and lingering illness, at his country residence in Summit, Waukesha County, WI, at the age of 55 years. He is buried with his family at FHC.
