Biography | This is "Thomas the School". His real identitiy eluded me from the time I first tripped over him in 1970 while perusing the 1851 Census until my cousin Richard and I finally sorted out all the pieces in 1990. He was the schoolmaster at the school in Eccleston and the enumerator at the 1851 census. I thought from 1970 up to 1988 that he was my great great great grandfather, but no trace of Samuel being the son of a Thomas could be found. Eventually I discovered of course that Samuel was the son of William ( 1776 ). Richard and I have now I think got to the bottom of the great "[ITAL:]Thomas the School"[:ITAL] mystery. Richard went to Eccleston in September 1988 with his brother, Barry and his nephew, Gareth ( the " gravebusters " ) ........ and they made an amazing series of discoveries. Firstly, Richard was looking for William Snelson ( 1776 )'s grave; the stones are hard to find ( but Richard knew they were there in 1971 when I had found them ). In addition, the stones are laid flat or have fallen and become covered by moss and grass and of course they are sandstone which means that they weather quickly and can soon become eroded and hard to read. To quote from Richard's letter to me ( 1 October 1988 ) :- [ITAL:] "Eventually young Gareth, looking suitably attired for a visit to a churchyard in denim and T-shirt dedicated to the God of Heavy Metal, saw the name SNELSON on a stone". [:ITAL] The grave contained the remains of [:TAB:] [:TAB:][BOLD:] Frances SNELSON died 19 July 1805 aged 1 month, Emma SNELSON died 9 March 1831 aged 22 years Margaret SNELSON died 10 September 1845 aged 73 years, and - wait for it - Thomas SNELSON died 26 January 1853 aged 79 years. [:BOLD] Richard believes ( and I agree ) this to be the grave of the infamous ( in the sense that I have been trying to nail him for 17 years )[ITAL:] "Thomas the School[:ITAL]" ( Richards great name for the old bastard ), the enumerator in Eccleston 1851 census returns. It wasn't until September 1989 that I caught onto some other facts that seem to confirm that we have got this all tied up. I was out one night baby-sitting - we are a member of a group of families that baby-sit for each other - and I was lazing around as I often do, just perusing all this detail when I thought it would be worthwhile to try and write a small program to calculate the dates between which any event occurred; I don't know about you, but I have terrible trouble working these things out. So, I turned to a page of notes at random and found my footnote of an Eccleston Monument Inscription "Thomas SNELSON died Jan 26th 1853 aged 79 years". Therefore Thomas must have been born between 27 March 1773 and 26 March 1774. We also know from the 1851 Census [UND:]School House Thomas Snelson Widower Schoolmaster 77 born in Farndon [:UND] So, Thomas must have been born between Apr 1773 and Apr 1774. So I thought I'd try and see whether anything else fitted, and there it was. I've had all this information for years but hadn't been able to hang it together. The key is here [:TAB:] [BOLD:] Farndon Register (C.B. Mixed) 1772-83 in P45/1/2 on Mf 152/1 [:TAB:] p78 11 Apr 1773 buried Thomas Snelson of Farndon [:TAB:] p79 26 Sep 1773 christened Thomas son of Thomas & Mary SNELSON [:TAB:] .......N.B. this entry inserted out of sequence [:TAB:] p87 28 May 1780 christened Phoebe base daughter of Mary SNELSON of Farndon [:TAB:] p89 9 Dec 1781 christened Elizabeth base daughter of Mary SNELSON of Farndon[:BOLD] This must be the family of [ITAL:]Thomas the School.[:ITAL] He was indeed born in Farndon and it looks as if his father Thomas died the same year; his mother Mary had two other children, his half-sisters Phoebe ( 1780 ) and Elizabeth ( 1781 ). I think he is the same Thomas Snelson listed in the 1850 Cheshire Directory as the Parish Clerk. His death cerificate describes him also as a clerk. Is it likeluy that a local Schoolmaster might also be the Parish Clerk ? That's what it looks like. Eccleston Monument Inscriptions (Thomas the School) (42.21 ECC) Frances SNELSON died Jul 19th 1805 aged 1 month. Emma SNELSON died Mar 9th 1831 aged 22 years. Margaret SNELSON died Sep 10th 1843 aged 73 years. [:TAB:] Also Thomas SNELSON died Jan 26th 1853 aged 79 years. [:CR:]. |

Biography | [:TAB:] Let's call him[ITAL:] "William the Oddfellow[:ITAL]" ; this must be the William who became a freeman of the City of Chester on 1 June 1872 - exactly the same day as George Snelson was admitted. It seems then that the two brothers were admitted at the same time. Ain't that nice ! [:TAB:] Again, there is some confusion here, as I think the date that I have for death should follow the date of burial. This is fairly normal practice ! So, I suspect that the date of death should be 1 March or alternatively the date of burial should be 30 January 1900. [:TAB:] He was Head of the Oddfellows of the City of Chester who erected a headstone to him. Under his name it reads [ITAL:] " Secretary of the Chester District of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows for several years, which office he held with credit to himself and satisfaction to his bretheren who showed their high esteem of his character and have erected this stone. The Memory of the Just is blessed.[:ITAL] " [:TAB:] Richard James Snelson reports that William married twice and that he ( Richard ) is descended from the first marriage. He was apparently fairly succesful but left all his estate to the descendents of the second marriage. There is some doubt caused by the closeness of some of the dates of birth ( e.g. both Henry ( Harry ) and Ellen in 1885 .... of course, the known dates are baptismal dates, not actual dates of birth ). [:TAB:] In the 1881 Census Return he is described as a House Carpenter. It seems that between 1886 and 1888 William went through a bit of a mid-life crisis and gave up the art of the woodworking joiner to run a boozer, namely the Grosvenor Arms. In 1888, four of their children ( Beatrice, John, Ellen and Ada ) were baptised at St. Mary's and the entry describes William as being the Innkeeper at the Grosvenor Arms ......... which I believe to be at 26 Handbridge. [:CR:] He was a cowkeeper (farmer). He died at his residence in Handbridge, Chester, aged 36 yrs. He was buried on the 2nd November 1855. (Source:- Cheshire Observer 10th November 1855) There is a monument see attcged photos :- Inscription Side 1: In Loving Memory Of WILLIAM The Beloved Husband Of ELIZA JANE SNELSON Who Died January 30th 1900 Aged 50 Years. He Was Secretary To The Chester District Of The Grand United Order Of Odd Fellows For Several Years, Which Office He Held With Credit To Himself, And Satisfaction To His Brethren Who To Shew Their High Appreciation Of His Character Have Erected This Stone. Biography | I have an original short version certificate of Aunty Mag's birth certificate. She was a spinster and a teacher I think. For a period in the 1950's she lived with her sister, my grandnother, at 113 Bowring Park Avenue, and then later went into a retirement home called "High Carrs" on Roby Road near to Roby Station. She was a very kind lady who spent a lot of time with Peter ( my brother ) and me when we were kids. [:CR:]. |
