The Snelson DataBase & Index has been compiled from my own original research since 1969 on the West Cheshire and Welsh lines, supplemented by sources in the public domain and contributions from many correspondents. This publication is only an extraction from my database and index and should be used with caution as a lead to further research and confirmation.
I acknowledge the unique contribution of my friend, the late Charles J Snelson of Oakville, Ontario. Charles set a high standard in his research, remarkable in its reach, depth, reliability and incisive dimensions. His original work published as "A Snelson Family History and Genealogy", the "1991 Supplement" and later publication "The Lives of Charles Hewett Snelson" in 1995 on the Snelson roots in Cheshire, Staffordshire, Buckinghamshire, Derbyshire, London, Australia, Canada and USA inspired me to expand my own database focused on Chester, Eccleston and Gresford, so as to include other collateral lines.
I also recognise the breadth of the original work on the American Snelson families completed by Leona Williams Smith in her "Snelson Lineage and Historical Records" in 1982, and declare that I have incorporated some data and extracts from her work as continuations of the lines identified by Charles as emigrants to the Americas. These sources have now been admirably expanded and elegantly published in 2007 in four, fine, hardback volumes, entitled "Snelson Family Heritage" by Verna Dinkins and John F. Snelson. As I have no personal experience in researching the American roots, I have relied upon the work of others and not attempted to provide evidence or citations relating to the source of the American data.
Each of these three excellent publications belong on the shelves of all serious Snelson family historians alongside George Ormerod's "History of the County Palatine of Cheshire", King's "Vale Royal", J.P. Earwaker's "East Cheshire", Palmer's "History of the Old Parish of Gresford", Ray Richard's "Old Cheshire Churches" and "Powys Fadog".
You may find the individual family historian contributors in the database if they have passed away (and I am aware of that and have entered details of their passing OR they were born more than 100 years ago - by using the SEARCH button, and typing in their unique Id number. Of course, if you are looking for yourself, hopefully this will fail - Catch 22 - as presumably you are alive {grin}.
