BiographyDaughter Pamela D. Houghton: He was in WWII. He went to OCS and was a first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers and was in the occupying forces in Japan. He was called up again for the Korean War. As I am told, he didn't want to go back into service and shot himself in the leg, developing osteomyelitis. He went to law school and was a corporate attorney for Disney and MCA. As a very right wing thinker in Hollywood in those days, it wouldn't surprise me if he was a supporter of Joseph McCarthy. As you may surmise, our political views are quite different but as we met only 4 times, most information I have about him is through my mother (not his biggest fan).

ObituaryDec 23, 1989George M. Houghton, a World War II veteran and 50-year Paradise resident, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 88. Memorial services were held yesterday at the Table Mountain Masonic Lodge in Paradise, which officiated the ceremony. Mr. Houghton was born in Providence, R.I. on July 25, 1901, and worked for 8-1/2 years as a correc- tional officer at Folsom Prison.
He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. In 1949, Mr. Houghton moved to Paradise from Los Angeles. A 55-year member of the Table Mountain Lodge #124 F&AM of Paradise, he was also a life member of both the VFW Post #2039 in Para- dise and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #106 of Paradise. Mr. Houghton was also a char- ter member of the Paradise Gem & Mineral Club and the Paradise Museum Association, and belonged to the Order of the Eastem Star Chapter #549 of Paradise. He was also a former member of the Paradise Citizens Council. Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife of three years, Mary, of Paradise. Private inumment will take place at a later date in Paradise Cemetery beside his late wife, Ruth E. Houghton.
