BiographyGranddaughter R. Lawson, 2019: She was an English major in College and I believe she got a Master’s in English Literature before becoming a high school English teacher in Marathon, NY. She got her BA in English from Elmira College and studied under Samuel Clemens’ ( aka Mark Twain) niece at Elmira.
My grandmother, Alice Margaret Nevin, was also an avid pursuer of all things genealogical. This interest in genealogy benefited her greatly in her old age when her cousin Frederick C Houghton who was a botany professor at the Univ of Delaware passed away in 1990 with no heirs. My grandmother had written him a letter years prior to his death inquiring about Houghton family genealogy issues/questions. This letter from my grandmother was found by the executor of his estate after his death among his personal effects. As a result of the executor finding this letter he was able to identify her (his 1st cousin) and a few of her other cousins as the sole remaining possible heirs to his estate. He was a bachelor who had never married and had no children, so as a result of the executor finding that letter she and a few relatives were able to split an inheritance from his estate which I think amounted to about $250,000 a piece after taxes and fees. This money was sorely needed to help provide financial support for her in her twilight years.

George W. Houghton, 97, of West Haven Apartments died in Rainbow Convalescent Center at 8 p.m. yesterday, following a lengthy illness. Born in Philadelphia, he had resided in Vineland most of his life. He was a member of the Senior Citizens of West Haven, a life- time member of the Gideons, member of the Wrest Baptist Tabernacle, and was formerly employed at radio station WWBZ as a custodian. Surviving are two daughters. Mrs. Ruth Lippincott of Rio Grande and Mrs. Anna King of Vineland; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Potter Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Friday conducted by the Rev. Benjamin Taylor, pastor of West Baptist Tabernacle. Burial

Lucy “Joy” Houghton Waddle

Lucy "Joy" Houghton Waddle, 86, passed away on May 6, 2010, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 26 years, Billy Mack Waddle.

Joy loved children, birds and flowers. She was an avid reader, an enthusiastic bridge player and a faithful participant in the annual Audubon bird count. Her giggle was infectious. Born and raised in New Jersey, Joy attended Scripps College in California, then moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked as a preschool teacher and an administrative assistant. In 1977, she and her husband Billy moved to Prescott, Ariz., where Joy volunteered at Yavapai Regional Medical Center and Miller Valley Elementary School. She became active in the Philanthropic Education Organization Chapter BG and Prescott People Who Care. In addition, she faithfully served as a greeter and a Stephen Minister at Prescott United Methodist Church.

Joy is survived by many family members and friends who will miss her deeply. These are stepchildren,Beverly McMurray of Albuquerque, N.M., William Waddle of Halifax, Va., and Michael Waddle of Winslow, Ark; grandchildren Kristin Sloboda, Heather Wellington, Michael Waddle and Melissa Waddle; and great-grandchildren Ever Steven Sloboda and Ashley Wellington. Her nieces and nephews include Susie Burtch of Richmond, Va., Nancy Tindell of Colorado Springs, Colo., Alan Thielemann of Atlanta, Ga., Bruce Houghton of Snohomish, Wash., Neil Houghton of Philadelphia, Pa., and Anita Graybill of Franktown, Colo.

A memorial service to honor Joy's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 2010, at the Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 West Gurley Street, Prescott, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Care Giving Fund, c/o Rev. Carol Mumford, Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 West Gurley Street, Prescott, AZ 86301.
