Abraham Lincoln Wiley, Charles Harkless (Harclots, Hercules, Hurkless) born in Hesse, 1761, came with his regiment to America as Hessian soldier. In the winter of 1777-78, while Howe's army was enjoying life in Philadelphia, Charles Harkless, Henry Philip Kiester, a Mr. Teawinkle and 5 others, deserted from their regiment, walked out the Germantown road until they met some Continental troops, took off their caps, threw them on the road , tramped on them, to indicate, since they knew no English, that they had deserted and wanted to join up with the American Army. They were taken to the Continental Headquarters, and after examination, four of them were admitted to the army and fought through to the close of the war. "On July 1, 1779, the 2nd Pennsylvania Line, which Charles Harkless was part of, having deserted from the Hessian army and enlisting in the Pennsylvania Line in May, 1779, operated in the area along the New Jersey-New York border, moving early in December to Middlebrook, New Jersey, for the winter of 1778-1779. There is no record of any particular action during the summer of 1779, but in October, 1779, it was at West Point in Anthony Wayne's brigade and its strength is shown as 452 officers and men. From there, it moved to winter quarters at Morristown, New Jersey where Charles Harkless' wife, Hopeful Aber, her parents & her brothers lived. "The regiment was also with Wayne on the September 21, 1780 march to Hartford, Connecticut, to greet General Rochambeau, and the return to Tappan, New York, and it was with the troops making the forced march from Tappan to West Point to reinforce the garrison there on September 25 after Benedict Arnold's defection was discovered."3 |
