John was a brother of Pearl, William Orr's wife. They farmed near Zealandia, Saskatchewan. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 1961. Marian wrote to her cousin, Annie Hughes, "We planned to celebrate our anniversary now instead of January, as we felt if the roads were blocked and it was cold, no one would want to venture out -- including Jack and me. I was responsible for the cake, the nut and fruit breads . . . over 100 signed the guest book . . . we got around 60 cards . . . $150.00 in gifts of money. Brother Jack sent a $100.00 check."
Their daughters were home to help. The weather was very hot. Marian continued, "We have never seen such weather; I have been here 50 years and I have seen snow on the ground this time of year."

Note by Rick Moffat:
Based upon his age, and proximity to other White's in Ludborough, this may be the same John Laughton as the one enumerated in the 1861 census - see Ludborough - RG9/2387, Folio 52, p. 8, CD page 106, famly 37. However, the census shows he was born at Tathwell, not Ludborough as indicated by Dr. Phil White of New Zealand. Research required.
