Index to "Philip Burlingham Letters"

The following is an expanded name index to letters written by Philip Burlingham to his wife and family in Michigan while he was working in a mining camp in Soapweed, California. The letters indicate that he arrived in California in July 1870, and that he intended to return to Michigan about the first of April 1871. The letters we have were all written between 4 November 1870 and 1 January 1871.

This index includes all of the people mentioned by name in the letters, but not all have been identified. Married women are indexed by both their birth name and married names. For people who are in our genealogy database, their name is a link to that person's page.

The index includes the following information for each person.

Surname, Given name

• Parents, and birth, marriage, and death information (when known).
• For some people, additional information, including how they're related to Philip Burlingham.
• Dates of the letters mentioning the person. The dates are links to the transcriptions of the corresponding letters.

Of course, most people are not mentioned by their full name in the letters. Family members are typically mentioned by their first name, and other people only by their last name. A variety of sources have been used to identify people, and the additional information that is included. These include databases at Ancestry and Family Search, information at Find A Grave, and various online books and web sites.
