She and her husband Calvin settled in Bellevue, Eaton Co., Michigan, where Calvin had moved three years earlier.10,6 They moved from Bellevue to Newbury Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, in June 1848.6 They are listed in the census of 1850 in Auburn Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio, along with their children Calvin M. and M. O. Phelps. They were living next door to Martha's brother Luther and his family. Also listed in Luther's household were his (and Martha's) parents Moses and Lucy Maynard, and Calvin's daughter C. M. Phelps.11
In the 1860 census she and Calvin are listed in South Newbury, Geauga Co., Ohio. Living with them were their daughter Martha and her husband Clinton Morton. Calvin's occupation is listed as a carpenter.12 They are listed twice in the 1870 census, both times in Newbury Twp. Calvin's occupation is listed as a farmer.13,14
In her husband Calvin Phelps' will, dated 30 April 1873 and proved 1 May 1877, she was left all of his property, with the proviso that the executor could sell the real estate to pay debts, except for one acre reserved for her. The land was sold, to her, on 20 Dec 1877 for $500.15,16
On 13 May 1878 she applied for a widow's pension based on her husband Calvin's military service during the War of 1812. She was admitted to the pension rolls on 27 February 1879, and received $8.00/month.6
In 1880 she was living as a widow with her sister Harriet and her husband Thomas Wilson in Auburn Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio.17
She died intestate, and on 15 October 1883 E. J. Wicks petitioned the court in Geauga Co., Ohio, to be appointed administrator of her estate, suggesting Johnson Way, Lewis Way, and Harvey Ensign as appraisers. Her daughter Martha O. Gilbert relinquished her right as administratrix. The personal estate was estimated to be worth $100, and the real estate $350. The petition was granted, and E. J. Wicks posted an administrator's bond of $500, with Orrin Maynard and Wm. Howard as secondary administrators.18

In 1880 Worthy Wallace Pratt was living servant in the household of A. Burkholz in Saugatuck Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan,8 and also working as a fisherman.8 From 1882 to 1883 he and his cousins Samuel Mark Burlingham and Justin Moss Burlingham briefly ran their own fishing business in Saugatuck. The business was unprofitable, and was sold. Samuel and Justin's sister Cora did their housework during this time. In later years Justin wrote several poems, including one about his fishing days on Lake Michigan that prominently mentions his cousin Wallace.9,10
In 1900 he was living in Harrison, Calumet Co., Wisconsin, with his daughters Fern and Bessie. Living with them were servants Mary Potter and Jahe Dashler.3 He was then working as a farmer.3,1

On the morning of the day he died, he and his mother, and his older brother Herschel, took some grain to the mill at Pine Creek. After leaving their grain at the mill, he stayed behind while Herschel and his mother went to visit with her sister Charity (Phelps) Burlingham. When they returned late that afternoon to pick up their grain, Calvin wasn't there, and they assumed he had returned home. When they found that he wasn't at home, Herschel and his father returned to the mill. Neighbors nearby told them that they had last seen Calvin in a boat on the mill pond around noon. A group began searching for him, and found his body in the pond around midnight.5

- [S3346] His birth date given here is consistent with his age listed in the 1870 census (7), and his age reported in a newspaper article about his death (14). His death record, however, says he drowned at age 13, and the Burlingham family genealogy says at age 15. In the low-resolution picture of his cemetery marker at Find A Grave his age at death appears to be be 11 years, 9 months, with the number of days unreadable, giving a birth date of about July 1866. However, the birth date we have for his sister Louise is 13 November 1866, so one of these two dates is clearly wrong. It's possible that what looks like an "11" in the picture is actually a 14; it's unlikely that it's actually 13 or 15.

His mother Lucy Ann Price may have been the sister of his wife Susan Burlingham's first husband Burton Price.3
He served during the Civil War in Co. H of the 12th Michigan Infantry, enlisting as a private on 26 October 1861 for three years service. The regiment was mustered in on 5 March 1862. They left Michigan on 18 March for St. Louis, Missouri, then traveled by steamboat to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, where they were attached to Colonel Peabody's brigade, General Prentiss's division, of the Army of the Tennessee. They fought at the Battle of Shiloh 6-7 April, and participated in the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi, from 29 April to 30 May. They also saw action at the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi, on 19 September, and at the Battle of Hatchie's Bridge at Matamora, Tennessee, on 5 October. On 24 December they successfully defended their post at Middleburg, Tennessee, against a force of 3,000 Confederates under Gen. Van Dorn, for which they were formally commended by Gen. Ulysses S. Grant for their "gallant and efficient service."
They moved to Memphis, Tennessee, then to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where they were part of the Siege of Vicksburg from 4 June to 4 July 1863. They next participated in the Siege of Little Rock, Arkansas, in August and September, and the Battle of Bayou Fourche on 10 September.
The regiment was then "veteranized," with 334 re-enlisting, including Edward Rice, on 19 December 1863 in Little Rock. Veterans were granted 30 days furlough, and started home for Michigan in January 1864. It was during his furlough that Edward Rice and Susan Burlingham were married, on 10 March 1864. The regiment then returned to Little Rock, arriving on 1 April.
They were engaged in various skirmishes in Arkansas during the summer of 1864, until October when they arrived at Duvall's Bluff, where they performed guard duty for the railroad, and provost and fatigue duty, until 6 June 1865, when they moved to Little Rock.
On 1 September 1865 he was promoted to sergeant. Shortly afterward, on 26 September, Companies H and K moved to Camden, Arkansas. In January 1866 the regiment gathered in Camden, where they were mustered out on 15 February. They left for Michigan right away, arriving in Jackson on 27 February, and were paid and disbanded on 6 March.7,8
He and his wife Susan are listed in the 1870 census in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan, along with Ada M. Rice (age 14) and Leroy E. Rice (age 2). Ada Rice is actually Ada Price, Susan's daughter by her first husband Burton Price.4 By 1880 they had moved to Arlington, Van Buren Co., Michigan, next door to Edward's mother Lucy.9 In 1900 and 1910 they were living in South Haven, Van Buren Co., Michigan. Living with them then was their son Sewell.5,10
