He served during the Civil War in Co. C of the 24th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, enlisting on 8 August 1862. The regiment was organized at Muscatine, Iowa, and mustered in on 18 September 1862. They left camp for Helena, Arkansas, on 20 October, where they spent the winter, and participated in Gen. Grant's Coldwater Expedition.
On 11 April 1863 they left Helena to join Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. They fought in the Battles of Port Gibson and Champion Hill, and participated in the Siege of Vicksburg from 24 May to Vicksburg's surrender on 4 July. On 1 August they moved to New Orleans, and spent the winter of 1863-64 in Madisonville, Louisiana. In the spring of 1864 they were part of the Red River Campaign, returned to New Orleans in June, and then traveled by steamer to Washington D.C. They fought at the Third Battle of Winchester on 19 September, and at the Battle of Cedar Creek on 19 October.
On 14 January 1865 they left Baltimore for Savannah, Georgia. They moved between various locations in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina for the next few months, and were mustered out in Savannah on 17 July. They traveled to Baltimore, then to Davenport, Iowa, where they were paid and disbanded.6,7
He and his wife Hannah may have moved to Iowa about 1875.8 In any case, they lived in Jefferson Twp., Ringgold Co., Iowa, where they are listed in the 1880 and 1900 federal censuses, and in the 1885 Iowa state census. Hannah's father Gideon Baughman was living with them in 1885.9,10,11
Listed with him and Hannah in the 1880 census was Samuel Willey, age 10, born in Iowa, and listed as "son." However, Wallace and Hannah were not married until 1872, and in the 1900 and 1910 censuses Hannah is listed as having had no children. Listed with them in the 1885 census is Samuel Mayes, age 15, born in Iowa. It seems likely that the two Samuels are actually the same person, and his true relationship to Wallace Willey is unknown.9,11,12,13
A nice sentiment was expressed about him and his wife Hannah by A. H. Bonebrake, in a local newspaper article reminiscing about his early life in Knowlton. He wrote "Mr. and Mrs. Willey lived in the south part of Knowlton. The only remembrance I have of this elderly couple is that they were exceptionally fine people."14
