She and her first husband Thomas lived in Prairie City, McDonough Co., Illinois.1
On 1 April 1863 she applied for a widow's pension based on her second husband William's service in the Civil War. Her initial application mentions one child by William, Lurilla, age 1. The pension was granted 30 October 1863.
On 29 September 1866 she applied for an increase, based on the government Act of 25 July 1866 allowing an increase on account of minor children. In this application she named two children, George Banks born 11 January 1861 and Louela Banks born 12 March 1863. Since she and William weren't married until 2 May 1861, the application was questioned by the pension office. In her response, dated 31 October 1866, she stated that George was her son by her first husband Thomas Luther, that they called him by the name Banks, and that she and her witnesses fully thought he was entitled to a pension the same as her child by William Banks. A later response, on 8 June 1867, says that Louela was born 12 March 1862 (not 1863), if any other statement is on file it is a mistake, and that she "cannot imagine how any mistake could have occurred in the age of her said child." The pension increase was allowed for her daughter Louela.
Her pension was suspended in 1868 due to her remarriage to David Auld. He died in 1896, and five years later, on 26 October 1901, she applied for a reinstatement of her widow's pension. This claim was seriously questioned by the pension office, based on false statements in her earlier applications. The process dragged on for more than three years, and in a statement dated 6 February 1905 she admitted that she gave the birth date of her son George as 11 January 1861 in her 1866 application to make it appear that he was her son by William Banks. The pension was apparently eventually reinstated; the records include a notice dated 22 April 1915 about a check that was returned to the pension office after her death.1
She and her third husband David are listed in Fulton Co., Illinois, in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, in Canton Twp. in 1870, and in Canton in 1880, with their own children, as well as children from their previous marriages.4,5

He served during the Civil War in Co. F of the 103rd Illinois Infantry, enlisting on 10 August 1862. The regiment was mustered in on 2 October, and left Peoria, Illinois, on 31 October 1862. During the War the Regiment participated in the Siege of Vicksburg, the Chattanooga Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the Carolinas Campaign. They fought in 24 battles, including the Battles of Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesborough, and Griswoldville, and in numerous smaller skirmishes. At the close of the War they left North Carolina for Washington, D.C., on 30 April 1865, passing through Richmond on the way, and participated in the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington on 24 May. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where they were ordered to be mustered out on 14 June, then traveled to Chicago, Illinois, where they were discharged on 9 July.7,8

She and her first husband Wallace may have moved to Iowa about 1875.6 In any case, she lived in Jefferson Twp., Ringgold Co., Iowa, the rest of her life. She is listed there with Wallace in the 1880 and 1900 federal censuses, and the 1885 Iowa state census (Hannah's father Gideon Baughman was living with them in 1885)7,8,9, by herself in the 1910 federal census10, with her second husband William in the 1920 federal census and the 1925 Iowa state census11,12, and by herself again in the 1930 federal census.13,14
Listed with her and her first husband Wallace in the 1880 census was Samuel Willey, age 10, born in Iowa, and listed as "son." However, Wallace and Hannah were not married until 1872, and in the 1900 and 1910 censuses Hannah is listed as having had no children. Listed with them in the 1885 census is Samuel Mayes, age 15, born in Iowa. It seems likely that the two Samuels are actually the same person, and his true relationship to Wallace Willey is unknown.7,9,10,15
A nice sentiment was expressed about her and Wallace by A. H. Bonebrake, in a local newspaper article reminiscing about his early life in Knowlton. He wrote "Mr. and Mrs. Willey lived in the south part of Knowlton. The only remembrance I have of this elderly couple is that they were exceptionally fine people."16

He and his brother Sylvanus both served during the Civil War in Co. G of the 11th Illinois Cavalry, Sylvanus enlisting on 1 November 1861, and Philitis a month later, on 2 December. The regiment was organized at Camp Lyon in Peoria, Illinois, and mustered in there on 20 December 1861. They moved to Benton Barracks, near St. Louis, Missouri, on 22 February 1862, and were on duty there until 28 March. At about that time Co. G was detached from the regiment, and assigned as Headquarters Guard for the 17th Army Corps. They participated in the Siege of Vicksburg from 18 May to 4 July 1863, and the Siege of Jackson from 10-17 July.
Sylvanus and Philitus were among the veterans of the Company who re-enlisted on 20 December 1863, and were mustered in on 31 December.
During the Atlanta Campaign from 8 June to 8 September 1864 his Company was part of the assault on Kennesaw Mountain on 27 June, the Battle of Atlanta on 22 July, the Siege of Atlanta from 22 July to 25 August, and the Battle of Jonesborough from 31 August to 1 September. They served with Gen. Sherman during the March to the Sea from 15 November to 10 December, the Siege of Savannah from 10-21 December, and the Carolinas Campaign beginning in January 1865.3,4,5
During the Carolinas Campaign the city of Columbia, South Carolina, surrendered to Gen. Sherman on 17 February 1865. That night fires erupted in the city, and were spread quickly by high winds. Philitus was one of several Union soldiers who died in the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown, and remains controversial.3

His middle name was probably Timothy, as he is listed as Tim Baughman in the 1870 census.6
In 1860 he was living with the family of Louis Vandyke in Canton Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, and working as a farm hand.7

After their marriage he and his wife Ann lived in Fulton Co., Illinois, where they are listed in the census in Banner Twp. in 1870 and Putman Twp. in 1880. In 1880 Sylvanus's father Gideon was living with them, along with servants C. Dykeman (age 20) and Luke Lyons (18). Also in 1880, Ann was suffering from "cholera morbus" (i.e., stomach flu) at the time of the census taker's visit.6,11
By 1885 they had moved to Jefferson Twp., Ringgold Co., Iowa, where they are listed in the 1885 Iowa state census, and where Sylvanus's sister Hannah and her husband Wallace Willey were living.12,13 They are also listed in Ringgold Co. in the 1895 Iowa state census (Sylvanus's father Gideon was again living with them)14, and in the 1900 federal census.15
He and Ann had three children, Elnora (b 1867, d 1933), Henry Clay (b 1869, d 10 January 1937), and Sarah A. (b abt 1872).11,2
