Relationship2nd great-granduncle of Charles Edward Towne
Michael Artman was born about 1800 in Elizabethtown, Hardin Co., Kentucky.3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 He was married first, by Samuel Foot, J. P., to Jane Penfield, daughter of Ephraim Penfield and Esther Turney, on 29 April 1830 in Huron Co., Ohio.11 He was married second, by William W. Raymond, Rector of St. Peter Church, to Mary L. Kingsley on 16 March 1871 in Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., Michigan. Note that he was age 70, and she just 25.12 He died from "enlargement of the heart" on 29 August 1877 in Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., Michigan.9 He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery (Section 3, Lot 8) in Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., Michigan.8
Michael Artman probably moved with his mother and siblings to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, about 1819, where her parents and brothers had settled earlier13,14, and is probably one of the three males age 16-25 (along with his brothers David and Solomon) listed there in his mother's household in the 1820 census.15 By 1827 he had moved to Huron Co., Ohio, where, on 2 April 1827, he was one of 14 voters in the first election held in the newly-formed Ripley Twp. He also helped supervise the election, and was chosen as one of the three township trustees.16 He is listed in Ripley Twp. in the 1830 census, with one male age 30-39 (himself) and one female 20-29 (his wife Jane).17 He and Jane probably moved to Fairfield Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, about 1833.18,19
After the death of his brother Solomon in 1837, Solomon's sons Henry and Michael came to live with them in Huron Co., Ohio, at least for a time.20 There is a listing for a Michael Artman in the 1840 census for Fairfield Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, with one male under age 5, one 5-9, and one 30-39, and one female under 5 and one 20-29. Although the ages aren't exactly consistent, this is probably Michael Artman (about age 40), his wife Jane (about 34), and their nephew Michael (5). The identification of the other two children is unclear. They could be other children of Michael's brother Solomon (son Henry was then 9, daughter Phoebe was 7, and son John was 3), although the entry for Solomon's widow Eliza in the 1840 census also includes children fitting these ages.21,22
He and Jane are again listed in Fairfield Twp. in 1850 and 1860. Their nephew Michael was still with them in 1850. Listed with them in 1860 were a servant Lucina Larkin (age 23), farm laborers Jno. Dick (20) and Reuben Coon (70), Zobeda Coon (68, probably Reuben's wife), and Leroy Harris (11).4,5
He and Jane were parties in several land transactions in Huron Co. from 1825 to 1864.23 In the 1850 census Michael's real estate was valued at $4500; in 1860 it was $8500, with $1500 in personal property.4,5
They moved to Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., Michigan, possibly about 1864, the date of their last land sale recorded in Huron Co.23,6 They are listed there in the 1870 census, with real estate worth $1500 and a personal estate of $12,000.6
After his second marriage, to Mary L. Kingsley in 1871, he adopted Mary's son George, who took the surname Artman.3,24
His will was dated 8 June 1876 and filed on 3 September 1877. His wife Mary and friend Frank M. Stewart were named executors. He left first, $1000 to the Foreign Missionary Society of the Free Will Baptist Society as an endowment; second, $2000 to his wife Mary L. Artman in lieu of all dower or share in his personal property; third, $1000 to George H. Artman, "infant son of my wife Mary L. Artman," to be used for his education and support until age 21; and fourth, $200 to the American Female Guardian Society & House of the Friendless of City of New York, and an additional $100 to the Society for life memberships for his wife Mary L. Artman and her son George H. Artman, plus Ellen B. Kingsley, Sarah R. Kingsley, and Cornelia Kingsley [his wife's sisters], of Elmira, Chemung Co., New York. The remainder was to be divided into shares corresponding to the number of surviving children of his brothers and sisters, and left to them (or their parents, if still living).25
The heirs listed by the executors included his widow Mary L. Artman, stepson George H. Artman, sister Barbara Banks in Illinois, an unnamed brother [David] in Kentucky, and children of his deceased sisters Margart Murphy and Phebe Proudfit.26 The inventory of his estate, taken 29 September 1877 and filed 21 December 1877, totaled $7381.96.27
The final account of his estate was not filed until almost ten years later, on 8 June 1887. After payment of debts and expenses, and items 1 and 2 from his will, $865.51 remained, and was paid to his second wife Mary L. Jackson (she had remarried), guardian of George H. Artman. Thus, the legatees in items 4 and 5 in his will, the American Female Guardian Society and his siblings and their children, received nothing.28

However, I haven't yet found him listed separately in 1820, and in any case that census didn't specifically list occupations for individuals. However, it did list the number of people engaged in agriculture, and there were four in Margaret (Mason) Artman's household in 1820, likely including Michael.

Mary Artman was born in October 1803 in Hardin Co., Kentucky.2,3 She married Andrew Shaver, son of John Shaver and Temperance Stull, on 19 September 1830 in Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio.4 She died on 28 September 1875 at age 71.5 She was buried at Shields Chapel Cemetery in Fulton Co., Illinois.5
Mary Artman probably moved with her mother and siblings to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, about 1819, where her mother's parents and siblings had settled earlier.6,7 She is no doubt the female age 30-39 listed in Andrew Shaver's household in Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, in the 1840 census.8
She and her husband Andrew are listed with their family in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Their son John, born about 1844, is listed with them in 1860, but not in 1850. John has not been found in the 1850 census. Living next door in 1850 were Andrew's mother and sister, both named Temperance Shaver. His sister was also next door in 1860. Andrew and Mary's daughter Alzina is listed with them in 1860, along with her children Thomas and Mary. Alzina and her children are also listed in 1860 with her husband Robert Curry in Carmel, Eaton Co., Michigan.9,3
She and Andrew moved to Putman Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, about 186510,11, where they are listed in the 1870 census. Their son Andrew, his wife Nancy, and their daughter Mary, were living with them.12

David Artman probably moved with his mother and siblings to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, about 1819, where her parents and brothers had settled earlier8,9, and is probably one of the three males age 16-25 (along with his brothers Michael and Solomon) listed there in his mother's household in the 1820 census.9 Unlike any of his siblings, however, he returned within a few years to Grayson Co., Kentucky, where he appears on the 1827 and 1828 tax rolls, listed as being over 21 but not owning property.7
He is listed in Hardin Co., Kentucky, in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. In 1830 his household had two males under age 5 (son Charles and ?), one male 30-39 (himself), one female under 5 (daughter Sarah), and one female 20-29 (wife Anna).      Barbara Artman was born on 26 December 1809 (based on her death date and age at death of 83 years, 6 months, 2 days) in Hardin Co., Kentucky.4,5 She married Nathaniel Butler Banks, son of John Banks, about 1827.6,3,2 She died on 28 June 1893 in Buckheart Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 83.5,3 She was buried at Shields Chapel Cemetery in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois.5
Her name also appears as Anna Barbara, or Anna B.3,7,8,5
She probably moved with her mother and siblings to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, about 1819, where her mother's parents and siblings had settled earlier.9,10
She is presumably the female age 20-29 listed in the household of N. B. Banks in the 1830 census in Greenwich Twp., Huron Co., Ohio.11 They moved to Fulton Co., Illinois, in 1835, initially settling on land that is now in the town of Cuba8, and are listed there in the 1840 census with one male age 30-39 (Nathaniel), one female 20-29 (Barbara), one male under 5 (William) and one 5-9 (Joshua), and one female 5-9 (Sarah) and one 10-15 (Margaret).12
The family moved to Buckheart Twp. in Fulton Co. in 18478, and they are listed there in the censuses from 1850 to 1870.1,13,7 In 1850 their married daughter Margaret Black and her children Martin and Martha were living with them, as was John Artman, age 25, born in Ohio. The relationship of John Artman to Barbara (Artman) Banks is unknown.14 And listed with them in 1860 was Ruth? (the name is difficult to read) Banks, age 23, born in New York. She was no doubt related to Nathaniel, but exactly how is unknown.13
In 1880, after her husband's death, she is listed in the census with her son Henry's family in Buckheart Twp.15

This source says she died 18 June 1893 at age 83y 6m 2d, and gives her birth date as 26 December 1809 "calculated from tombstone death date." Shields Chapel cemetery records give her death date as 28 June 1893. It's assumed that the death date of 18 June 1893 is a typo, since the birth date and age at death given by Alzner are consistent with the death date of 28 June 1893 in the cemetery records.

FatherMichael Artman1,2 b. a 1767, d. a 1816
MotherMargaret Mason1,2 d. 14 Apr 1849
Relationship2nd great-grandaunt of Charles Edward Towne
Phebe Artman was born on 26 December 1809 (based on her age at death of 55 years 1 month 3 days) in Hardin Co., Kentucky.3,4 She was married by Wm. Maxwell, J. P., to Andrew Proudfit, son of Andrew Proudfit and Mary Marshall, on 14 April 1835 in Richland Co., Ohio.5,6 She died from typhoid fever on 29 January 1865, about three weeks after her daughter Mary died from the same disease, in Ashland Co., Ohio, at age 55. Her obituary noted that although she died of typhoid fever, "it is well known that her exceeding tenderness and love for an only daughter, whose remains she but recently followed to the grave, hurried her disease rapidly to its sad result."7,8,3 She was buried at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ashland Co., Ohio.3
She probably moved with her mother and siblings to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, about 1819, where her mother's parents and siblings had settled earlier.9,10
She and her husband Andrew are listed in Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, in Montgomery Twp. in 1850, and in Ashland in 1860, with their children John and Mary. Also with them in 1850 were John Shafer (age 25, born in Pennsylvania), John Tract (17, Ohio), and Catharine Artman (6, Ohio). Catharine is presumed to be the daughter of Phebe's brother Adam Artman. John Shafer may also be a relative; Phebe's sister Mary Artman married an Andrew Shaver.11,12

Children of Phebe Artman and Andrew Proudfit

The Artman genealogy lists one additional child for Andrew Proudfit and Phebe Artman, Auddie, born about 1840, and says that cemetery records list that name under theirs "so Auddie undoubtedly died as an infant." However, no other record has been found to confirm this, and Andrew's obituary says he was the father of three children (only one was then living). It's possible this child has been confused with Addie, the daughter of their son John Proudfit, who was buried in Ashland cemetery apparently as an infant, and shares a marker with their daughter Mary (Proudfit) Page.15,16

Ephraim Foster Barker1,2

b. 10 January 1778, d. 20 April 1860
FatherDavid Barker1 b. 1 Jun 1731
MotherSarah Barker1
Ephraim Foster Barker was born on 10 January 1778 in Methuen, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1,3 He married first Hannah Morse, intentions published on 18 August 1801 in Boxford, Essex Co., Massachusetts.2 He was married second, by Vachael Metcalf, J. P., to Elizabeth Artman, daughter of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, on 28 September 1820 in Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio.4,5 He married third Betsey Hasey about 1826 in Vermont.6 He died on 20 April 1860 in Camden, Hillsdale Co., Michigan, at age 82.7,8 He was buried at Fitchville Cemetery in Fitchville, Huron Co., Ohio.7
He moved with his parents about 1784 ("at the age of six") to Temple, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire.9 He returned to Massachusetts about 1800, where he married9, and he and his wife Hannah moved back to Temple, New Hampshire, about 18029, then to Landgrave, Bennington Co., Vermont, about 1807.9 They also lived at various times in New York, in Easton, Washington Co., in Hoosick Falls, Rensselaer Co., and in Scipio, Cayuga Co.9
In 1818, with his two oldest children, he moved to Greenwich Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, where they were the second settlers in the area. After building a cabin, and clearing and planting three acres of land, he went back to New York for the rest of his family, returning on 11 September 1818.9 In 1823, when Greenwich became an independent township, he was elected Constable at the first township election.9 On 20 January 1824 he bought 125 acres in Greenwich Twp., just north of the current town of Greenwich, from Jehiel Mead of Greenwich, Connecticut, for $1569, and sold his original 19 1/2 acre homestead to Robert Golding.9
He was listed in the 1850 census in the household of Elmer and Mary Hess (she was a daughter from his first marriage). Also listed there were E. H. and William Barker (his children from his third marriage), and Maria and Ephraim Briggs (possibly his grandchildren by his daughter Alzina, who had married David Briggs).10,9
He had a total of 13 childlren, nine with his first wife Hannah Morse, two with his second wife Elizabeth Artman, and two with his third wife Betsey Hasey.9

Eliza Poff was born on 28 February 1812 (the Artman genealogy says "February 26th 1912 (sic)").3,1 She was baptized as Elysa Pfaf on 30 May 1812 at the Canadochly Church in Windsor Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania.3 She married first Solomon Artman, son of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, probably about 1830 in Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio.1,2 She was married second, by Joseph A. Madden, Justice of the Peace, to Daniel Weisel on 25 December 1842 in Montgomery Twp., Richland Co., Ohio.4,1 She died on 10 August 1883 in Portland, Jay Co., Indiana, at age 71.1 She was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Portland, Jay Co., Indiana.5

She and her second husband Daniel lived in Chester Twp., Wayne Co., Ohio, where they were listed with their children in the censuses from 1850 to 1870. Eliza's children Henry, Phebe, and John from her first marriage were also with them in 1850 (mistakenly listed in the census with the surname Weisel), and John was still with them in 1860.7,8,9 In 1880 she and Daniel were listed in their son Isaiah's household in Bearcreek Twp., Jay Co., Indiana.10
She and her second husband Daniel had three known children, Catharine (b abt 1844), Eliza Jane (b abt 1846), and Isaiah (b 9 September 1852, d 24 December 1938).1,7,8

b. 10 September 1800
FatherElisha Murphy3
MotherJennet Field3
William R. Murphy was born on 10 September 1800 in West Twp., Huntingdon Co., Pennsylvania.3 He married Margaret Artman, daughter of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, about 1824 in Richland Co., Ohio.3,1,2
He moved to Richland Co., Ohio, with his parents in 1819.4,3 He is listed in the 1830 census in Orange Twp., Richland Co., with one male under age 5 and one 30-39, and one female under 5, one 5-9, and two 20-29.5 He and his wife Margaret moved to Illinois in 1831, settling on government land in Fulton Co. about 1.5 miles west of the town of Cuba.4,3 He later purchased the land, totaling 80 acres, through a pre-emptive right, and a land patent was issued to him on 4 August 1838.6 About two years later he bought 40 additional acres of federal land in the same township, with the patent issued on 3 November 1840.7
He is listed in Twp. 6 North, Range 2 East, in the 1840 census, with one male under age 5, two males 5-9, one male 10-14, one male 30-39, one female 10-14, and one female 30-39.8 He and his wife Margaret are listed there (now part of Cass Twp.) in the censuses from 1850 to 1870. Their sons James, Abram, and Milton were with them in 1850; son James and his new wife Elmira were with them in 1860, along with farm laborer Henry Heifner and servant Ellen Powell; and they were listed by themselves in 1870.9,10,11
He was drafted to serve in the Black Hawk War shortly after settling in Fulton Co., but his brother Adam served in his place, from 15 May to 25 June 1832, in Capt. Asel F. Ball's Co. of Mounted Volunteers.12,13

Andrew Shaver1

b. 15 July 1800, d. 14 December 1883
FatherJohn Shaver2 d. 23 Jun 1830
MotherTemperance Stull2
Andrew Shaver was born on 15 July 1800 in Hopewell Twp., Huntingdon Co., Pennsylvania.3,2 He married Mary Artman, daughter of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, on 19 September 1830 in Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio.1 He died on 14 December 1883 (his grave marker appears to say 11 December 1883) at age 83.4,3 He was buried at Shields Chapel Cemetery in Fulton Co., Illinois.3
He moved to Fairfield Co., Ohio, in 18162, then to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, in the spring of 1829.2 He is listed in Orange Twp. in the 18305 and 1840 censuses.6
He and his wife Mary are listed with their family in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. Alzina and her children are also listed in 1860 with her husband Robert Curry in Carmel, Eaton Co., Michigan.7,8
He and Mary moved to Putman Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, about 1865 or 18669,10, where they are listed in the 1870 census. Their son Andrew, his wife Nancy, and their daughter Mary, were living with them.11 He was again listed in Putman Twp. in the 1880 census, after his wife's death. His son Andrew and his family were still living with him, along with his son John, age 36.12
It should be noted that the Artman genealogy erroneously states that he served during the Civil War in Co. C of the 186th Ohio Infantry. It was actually his son Andrew who served.13,14

From Andrew's father John Shaver's pension application, and from the 1850 and 1860 censuses, we know that Andrew had a sister Temperance born about 1795, and that his mother Temperance was born about 1756. The older male and female are thus probably Andrew's parents. Since John Shaver died in June 1830, and Andrew Shaver and Mary Artman weren't married until September 1830, the female age 30-39 probably isn't Mary, who would have only been about 27 anyway, but his sister Temperance.

Nathaniel Butler Banks1,2,3

b. 10 October 1801, d. 20 February 1878
FatherJohn Banks4
Nathaniel Butler Banks was born on 10 October 1801 in Greenwich, Fairfield Co., Connecticut.2 He married Barbara Artman, daughter of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, about 1827.5,2,3 He died on 20 February 1878 (the Artman genealogy says 20 January 1875, and the Fulton County history says 20 January 1878) in Buckheart Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 76.6,1,2 He was buried at Shields Chapel Cemetery in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois.6
He is listed in the 1830 census in Greenwich Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, with one male age 20-29 (himself), one female 20-29 (his wife Barbara), and one female under 5 (daughter Margaret).7 They moved to Fulton Co., Illinois, in 1835, initially settling on land that is now in the town of Cuba1, and are listed there in the 1840 census with one male age 30-39 (Nathaniel), one female 20-29 (Barbara), one male under 5 (William) and one 5-9 (Joshua), and one female 5-9 (Sarah) and one 10-15 (Margaret).8
The family moved to Buckheart Twp. in Fulton Co. in 18471, and they are listed there in the censuses from 1850 to 1870.9,10,11 In 1850 their married daughter Margaret Black and her children Martin and Martha were living with them, as was John Artman, age 25, born in Ohio. The relationship of John Artman to Barbara (Artman) Banks is unknown.12 And listed with them in 1860 was Ruth? (the name is difficult to read) Banks, age 23, born in New York. She was no doubt related to Nathaniel, but exactly how is unknown.10

Andrew Proudfit1,2

b. 26 May 1809, d. 12 February 1883
FatherAndrew Proudfit1
MotherMary Marshall1
Andrew Proudfit was born on 26 May 1809 (his age at death of 73 years 8 months 16 days implies a birth date of 27 May 1809) in York Co., Pennsylvania.3,1,4 He was married first, by Wm. Maxwell, J. P., to Phebe Artman, daughter of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, on 14 April 1835 in Richland Co., Ohio.2,5 He was married second, by P. R. Roseberry, to Rebecca Decker on 5 September 1865 in Ashland Co., Ohio.6,1 He died on 12 February 1883 in Ashland Co., Ohio, at age 73 from the effects of a head injury suffered in a fall two days earlier.3,4 He was buried on 14 February 1883 at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ashland Co., Ohio.4,3
He and his first wife Phebe are listed in Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, in Montgomery Twp. in 1850, and in Ashland in 1860, with their children John and Mary. Also with them in 1850 were John Shafer (age 25, born in Pennsylvania), John Tract (17, Ohio), and Catharine Artman (6, Ohio). Catharine is presumed to be the daughter of Phebe's brother Adam Artman. John Shafer may also be a relative; Phebe's sister Mary Artman married an Andrew Shaver.7,8
In the 1870 census he and his second wife Rebecca are listed in Ashland, along with Catharine Dinninger (age 18, born in Pennsylvania), possibly Rebecca's daughter from her first marriage.9 They are listed back in Montgomery Twp. in the 1880 census. Living with them then were Ellsworth Decker (age 15, born in Ohio), Alice Shafer (13, Ohio), and Barbara Rudy (30, Pennsylvania). Ellsworth Decker is probably related to Rebecca, and Alice Shafer may be related to Andrew's first wife Phebe, through her sister Mary.10
He served three or four terms as Trustee, as well as in other positions in Montgomery Twp.1
The Ashland Co. history, published in 1880, describes him as being "of large physique, weighing some two hundred and eighty pounds, and is well preserved."1

Children of Andrew Proudfit and Phebe Artman

The Artman genealogy lists one additional child for Andrew Proudfit and Phebe Artman, Auddie, born about 1840, and says that cemetery records list that name under theirs "so Auddie undoubtedly died as an infant." However, no other record has been found to confirm this, and Andrew's obituary says he was the father of three children (only one was then living). It's possible this child has been confused with Addie, the daughter of their son John Proudfit, who was buried in Ashland cemetery apparently as an infant, and shares a marker with their daughter Mary (Proudfit) Page.13,3

Gideon Baughman1,2

b. 7 April 1807, d. 13 February 1904
Gideon Baughman was born on 7 April 1807 in Ashland, Ohio.1 He married first Lavina Artman, daughter of Michael Artman and Margaret Mason, on 7 February 1833 in Fulton Co., Illinois.2,1 He married second Martha Ann Yocom, widow of Moses Craig, on 11 April 1852 in Fulton Co., Illinois.3,4,5,6,7,8,9 They were later divorced, presumably between 1860, when they were listed together in the census, and 1870, when Martha was listed in the census with her children Newton and Araminta but without Gideon.5,10,11 He died on 13 February 1904 at his daughter Sarah's home in Buckheart Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 96.1,12 He was buried at Shields Chapel Cemetery in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois.12
At the time he was enumerated for the 1850 census, on 12 November, about nine months after his first wife Lavina's death, he was living in Buckheart Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, with their children Hannah, Mary, Louisa, Philitus, Sylvanus, Sarah, and Jasper.13 In 1860 he and his second wife Martha were living in Prairie City, McDonough Co., Illinois, with their daughter Araminta, Martha's children Elvira and Newton Craig from her first marriage, and Francis Yokom, possibly a brother or nephew of Martha's.5 His seven children from his first marriage, then ranging in age from 23 to about 11, weren't with them. At least four (Mary, Sylvanus, Sarah, and Jasper) remained in Fulton Twp., living with other families.5,14,15,16
On 18 June 1862, at age 55, he enlisted for three months service during the Civil War in Co. D of the 70th Illinois Infantry. The Regiment was organized at Camp Butler, near Springfield, Sangamon Co., Illinois, and mustered in on 4 July. They never saw action, remaining at Camp Butler doing guard duty until being mustered out on 23 October.17
After being divorced from his second wife he apparently moved around, living with several of his children. He has not been found in the 1870 census, but in 1880 he was living with his son Sylvanus's family in Putman Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois.18,1 He then moved to Ringgold Co., Iowa, where he was living with his daughter Hannah's family in 188519, and again with his son Sylvanus's family in 1895.20 He was back in Illinois in 1900, living with his daughter Sarah's family in Buckheart Twp., Fulton Co.21 He apparently moved back to Iowa for a time, as his obituary published in 1904 says "about a year ago he returned from Knowlton [Iowa]," where both his daughter Hannah and son Sylvanus were then living. He next lived for a few months with his daughter Mary's family in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois, and was living with his daughter Sarah's family in Buckheart Twp. at the time of his death in 1904.1
He and his second wife Martha had one child, Araminta (b abt 1854).5,1

Children of Gideon Baughman and Lavina Artman

According to Gideon's obituary, they had eight children, with five living in 1904, but names are known only for the seven listed below.1

  9. [S3346] The fact that her surname was Yocom, and that her first husband was Moses Craig, is determined from a variety of sources, put together. First, the 1860 census lists Gideon Bughman and Martha Bughman (age 33, born in Kentucky), with children Elvira Craig (age 12, born in Kentucky), Newton Craig (11, Missouri), and Araminta Bughman (6, Illinois). Second, the FamilySearch database Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 includes Mrs. Elvira Craig Brees, born 29 January 1848 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, daughter of Moses Craig and Martha Yocom, and the Ancestry database California, Biographical Index Cards, 1781-1990 has Newton N. Craig born 4 June 1849 in Perryville, Missouri, son of Moses Craig and Martha Ann Yocom. And third, the 1850 U. S. Census Mortality Schedule for Buckheart, Fulton Co., Illinois, lists Moses Craig, born in Kentucky, who died in April 1850 at age 45. Taken together, this shows that Martha Ann Yocum married first Moses Craig, probably in Kentucky; that Moses died in 1850 in Fulton Co., Illinois; and that the Martha Ann Craig who married Gideon Baughman in Fulton Co. was Martha Ann (Yocom) Craig.
