Possibly Luke P. Phillips (1808-1893)
Luke P. Phillips was born in 1808 in Marion, Ontario Co. (now Wayne Co.), New York.4,5,6 He married first Patience Simmons, possibly the daughter of Samuel Simmons and Amy Beal, in New York, probably in the spring of 1831.7,8 He married second Mary E. (?) on 14 November 1876 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.2 They were divorced within a year (see below for details).9 He married third Jane Wilson, daughter of John Wilson, on 23 June 1879 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.10 He died on 8 February 1893 at home in Pontiac Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, from a paralytic stroke.11,12 He was buried on 10 February 1893 at Oak Hill Cemetery (Block 1, Lot 194, Grave 3) in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan. The cemetery plots for him and his first wife Patience were purchased by Thurston Simmons, probably Patience's brother, on 16 April 1848.13,14
He moved to Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1828, along with his mother, brother, and two sisters, settling on the 80-acre Galloway farm that he had purchased before arriving.4 He went back to New York, probably in the fall of 1830, spent the winter, married there in the spring [of 1831], and returned to Michigan in May, encountering a severe storm on the way.8
He is listed in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan, in the 1840 census15, and that year was taxed $1.24 for 40 acres ("NW 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec 14") in Pontiac Twp.16 He and his first wife Patience are listed in the city of Pontiac in the 1850 and 1860 cenuses3,17, and in Pontiac Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1870. In 1870 their widowed daughter Juliette was living with them.18 His real estate and personal property were valued at $3600 and $600 in 1860, and $6000 and $1000 in 1870.17,18
Luke's second marriage, to Mary E. (?), was justifiably short. It was very sudden. One news story says they got engaged the evening they met9, and they were soon married "to the surprise and dismay of [Luke's] relatives and friends."19 Mary left after a few months, and Luke published a notice in the newspaper saying he would no longer be responsible for her debts. This prompted Mary to sue for divorce, charging infidelity. She brought in a girl aged 14 who had previously worked for Luke, who told the prosecutor that he had tried to rape her. Luke was arrested, but quickly released on bail arranged by his friends and neighbors. The case was dismissed when the girl recanted, saying that Mary had instigated the charge.9
With the help of his friends, Luke began investigating Mary's background, and discovered that she had been married four times before, to men named Farrer, McAllister, Wolverton, and Quackenbush, that two of these previous husbands were still living, and that she hadn't obtained a divorce from any of them. She was arrested for bigamy on 20 September 1877, and tried on 25 October, with all three of her living husbands as witnesses. The jury deliberated just 30 minutes before finding her guilty.9,20 She was initially sentenced on 10 November to two years hard labor at the State Prison in Jackson, Michigan, but three days later this was changed to two years at the House of Correction in Detroit.21
Luke and his third wife Jane are listed in Pontiac Twp. in the 1880 census. Also listed in the household, as servants, are Jane's daughter Mary Westoby from her first marriage, age 31, born in England, and Napoleon Gibbs, age 17, born in Ontario. Luke's parents are both listed as being born in Connecticut.22
He was a member of the Oakland County Pioneer Association.12
In his will, made on 3 July 1879 a little over a week after his third marriage, he left $300 to his wife Jane in lieu of all her dower rights, with the rest to go equally to his children, or their heirs if they were deceased. His son Charles was named executor, and presented his petition for probate on 10 February 1893, the same day he (Luke) was buried. Charles was formally appointed executor on 16 March and posted a bond of $500, with his brother William Phillips and brother-in-law John McRath as sureties.
The final account was filed on 21 October 1893, and showed a balance of $2430.56 to be divided among the heirs, apparently not including the $300 left to his widow Jane. His children Charles, Oscar, Juliette, William, and Emily each received $303.82; Lewis Phillips, son of his deceased son Albert, received $303.82; Frank, Herbert, and Eddie Weston, children of his deceased daughter Rhoda, each received $101.27; and Daniel Eldred and Almyra Westcott, apparently children of his deceased daughter Maria, each received $151.91.23,24,25

  1. [S3346] The picture shown here of Luke Phillips is from the collection of his granddaughter Jessie (Phillips) Towne. Many years ago some of these pictures were copied by photographing them, and 3.5x5 inch prints were made. The picture here is a scan of that print.
Notes were also taken at the time, presumably from notations in the original album. Handwritten identification on a few of the pictures appears, based on the context and known relationships (e.g., "Mother's cousins"), to have been written by one of Jessie's children. For this picture the notes say "Jessie's great-grandfather Phillips," and written on the picture is "Great-great-grandfather Phillips."
If the notes are correct, and the writing on the picture was by one of Jessie's children, this would be the father of Luke Phillips, whose given name is as yet unknown. However, printed on the mounting card is "Hunter, 227 Jefferson Ave., Detroit, Mich." From Directory of Early Michigan Photographers by David V. Tinder, Hiram H. Hunter was a photographer at that address from 1885-1888. Assuming Luke's father was at least 20 when Luke was born (so born by 1788), he'd have been nearly 100 by the time this picture was taken. Luke, however, was about 77-80. So, this is probably Jessie (Phillips) Towne's grandfather Luke Phillips, not her great-grandfather.

  8. [S7885] "Luke Phillips", Pontiac Weekly Bill Poster, 4 March 1874, p. 1, col. 4. This article says he moved back to New York from Michigan in the "fall of 1831," married there in the spring (i.e., 1832), and returned to Michigan with his new wife. But it also says that they encountered a severe storm on the way, and that "my wife thought she should always remember that birthday as long as she lived; that will be forty-three years the twenty-ninth day of next May." The article was published 4 March 1874, so the "twenty-ninth day of next May" would be 29 May 1874, and 43 years previous is 29 May 1831. So, he seems to be off by a year, either in the year of his move back to New York, or in his statement about how long ago it was.
Note that Luke and Patience's son Alfred was born in June 1832 (based on his age at death), so conceived about October 1831. (It's unlikely that these dates are off by a year, since Alfred's brother Charles was born in October 1833.) Thus, it seems likely that Luke actually moved back to New York in the fall of 1830, and married in the spring of 1831.

Possibly Patience Simmons (1811-1875)
Patience Simmons was born in New York on 29 May, probably in 1811. (The year is based on her age at death shown on her cemetery marker, and her entries in the 1860 and 1870 censuses, although her entry in the 1850 census implies 1807.)6,7,8,9,3 She married Luke P. Phillips in New York, probably in the spring of 1831.10,6 She died on 30 April 1875 at age 63.7 She was buried on 2 May 1875 at Oak Hill Cemetery (Block 1, Lot 194, Grave 4) in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.7,11,5
Although Patience's parents are listed above as Samuel Simmons and Amy Beal, no record has been found explicitly naming them as her parents. Their identification is based on circumstantial evidence. A biographical sketch of their son Thurston, born 23 November 1818 in Marion, Ontario Co. (now Wayne Co.), New York, says that he was the fourth of their five children - three boys and two girls. Around 1834 he, his mother, and his brothers moved to Oakland Co., Michigan, following his two sisters who had already moved there after being married.4 Patience's husband Luke Phillips was also born in Marion, moved to Oakland Co. in 1828, and returned to New York to marry Patience.6,12 Further, on 16 April 1848, after he had moved to Livingston Co., Michigan, Thurston purchased the cemetery plots back in Pontiac where Patience and her husband Luke Phillips would later be buried, along with three of their family members.5 All this fits well with Patience being one of Thurston's two sisters.
She and her husband Luke are listed in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan, in the 1850 and 1860 censuses3,8, and in Pontiac Twp., Oakland Co., Michigan, in 1870. In 1870 their widowed daughter Juliette was living with them.9

If that note is correct, this is likely Jessie (Phillips) Towne's paternal grandmother Patience (Simmons) Phillips (1811-1875), who died in Pontiac, Michigan. Jessie's maternal grandmother Sarah Magdalena Poff (1808-1877) was buried in Ashland Co., Ohio, and as far as we know never lived in Michigan.

Oscar F. Phillips was born on 16 October 1835 (the 1900 census says January 1836) in Michigan.1,4 He married Mary E. Hildreth, daughter of Luvan W. Hildreth and Jane R. Strawder, in November 1867 in Chester, Eaton Co., Michigan.3,5 He died from apoplexy on 21 October 1907 in Marshall Twp., Calhoun Co., Michigan, at age 72.1 He was buried on 23 October 1907 in Eaton Co., Michigan.1

Mary continued for eight years, and Oscar for possibly nine years (the number written in the "U.S. Special Census on Deaf Family Marriages and Hearing Relatives" is difficult to read).8,3
Oscar and Mary were living in Burlington, Lapeer Co., Michigan, in 1870, near Oscar's brothers Alfred and Charles.6 They moved to Chester Twp., Eaton Co., Michigan, probably before 1872 when their son Ralph was born there.9 They are listed there together in the 1880 census, next to Mary's parents.7 Oscar was still living there in 1900, after Mary's death.4

Mary E. (?)1

b. about 1819
Mary E. (?) was born about 1819 (based on her age of 57 at the time of her marriage to Luke Phillips on 14 November 1876) in either Genesee or Ontario Co., New York.2 She married Luke P. Phillips on 14 November 1876 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan.1 They were divorced within a year (see below for details).3
At the time of her marriage to Luke Phillips, her residence was given as Sheridan, Montcalm Co., Michigan.1
This marriage was justifiably short. It was very sudden. One news story says they got engaged the evening they met3, and they were soon married "to the surprise and dismay of [Luke's] relatives and friends."4 Mary left after a few months, and Luke published a notice in the newspaper saying he would no longer be responsible for her debts. This prompted Mary to sue for divorce, charging infidelity. She brought in a girl aged 14 who had previously worked for Luke, who told the prosecutor that he had tried to rape her. Luke was arrested, but quickly released on bail arranged by his friends and neighbors. The case was dismissed when the girl recanted, saying that Mary had instigated the charge.3
The jury deliberated just 30 minutes before finding her guilty.3,5 She was initially sentenced on 10 November to two years hard labor at the State Prison in Jackson, Michigan, but three days later this was changed to two years at the House of Correction in Detroit.6

Edwin Appleby Weston1,2

b. 18 February 1831, d. 17 December 1923
FatherSamuel Weston3,4 b. a 1803
MotherLucy Chappel3,4 b. a 1809
Edwin Appleby Weston was born on 18 February 1831 in New York.5,6 He married first Rhoda Ann Phillips, daughter of Luke P. Phillips and Patience Simmons, on 16 May 1856 in Oakland Co., Michigan.7 He was married second, by Wm. G. Stone, Rector of the Grace Church, to Elizabeth A. Abbott, daughter of William Abbott and Margaret Cannon, on 17 February 1891 in Lapeer, Lapeer Co., Michigan.3 He died on 17 December 1923 at age 92.5 He was buried at Stiles Cemetery in Lapeer Co., Michigan.8
He served during the Civil War in Company G, 4th. Michigan Infantry Regiment (reorganized), enlisting on 6 September 1864. His wife's brother Charles Phillips served in the same company. Edwin was promoted to Corporal on 8 October 1864.
The regiment left Adrian, Michigan, on 22 October 1864 and traveled to Decatur, Alabama, arriving on 28 October, where they helped defend the town during an attack by General Hood. They were stationed at Whitesboro, Alabama, on 1 November 1864 and fought at New Market 19-20 November. They moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, soon afterwards, where they stayed until 15 January 1865, doing picket duty and guarding supply trains. They next moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where they stayed until 23 March, then traveled throughout Tennessee, eventually ending up in Nashville on 27 April. On 16 June the regiment left for New Orleans, then Green Lake, Texas, where they remained for two months. On 11 September 1865 they left on foot for Salada Creek near San Antonio, 170 miles away, arriving on 25 September. They again camped for two months, before being assigned to provost duty in San Antonio.
While in Texas the regiment lost many of its soldiers to disease, caused by the heat and unhealthy water supply, especially at Green Lake. Out of 1300 men in the regiment, only seven men died as a result of injuries, but 141 died from disease. The regiment was formally mustered out of service in Houston on 26 May 1866. Edwin, however, was discharged for disability about a week earlier, on 18 May 1866, suffering from piles, sunstroke, and rheumatism.9,10,11,12
He and his first wife Rhoda were living in Lapeer, Lapeer Co., Michigan, in 1860.13 They moved to Mayfield Twp., Lapeer Co., Michigan, by 18701, and are listed there in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.1,14
He and his second wife Elizabeth lived in Lapeer, probably from at least 1900 to 1920.6,15,16 He was farmer most of his life, although his occupation was listed as landlord in the 1900 census.13,1,14,6

Adam Artman was born about 1804 (based on his age at death of 64) in Hardin Co., Kentucky.4,5,3 He married first Mary Lomann.2,5 He married second Sarah Magdalena Poff on 28 January 1836 in Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio.6 He died on 11 March 1868.4 He was buried at Nankin Cemetery in Nankin, Ashland Co., Ohio.4
His father died about 1816, and about 1819 (at "about fourteen or fifteen years of age") he moved with his mother and siblings to Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, where his mother's family had settled several years earlier.7
No primary evidence has been found for the marriage of Adam Artman and Mary Lomann, or for Mary's death. The earliest known record for the marriage is in the Hester genealogy, published in 1905, which simply says Adam Artman "m. Mary Lomann; second m. Lena Blessing." The 1830 census for Montgomery Twp., Richland Co., Ohio, lists Adam Artman with one male and one female in the household, both age 20-29, which implies that he was then married. Also listed in 1830, on the line above Adam Artman, is Richard Loman, with 2 males 15-19, 1 male 20-29, 1 male 60-69, 1 female 10-14, and 1 female 50-59.2,8
In 1840 he is listed in Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), with one male under 5 (son George), one male 5-9 (stepson John Blessinger), one male 30-39 (himself), one female under 5 (daughter Almira), two females 5-9 (daughter Margaret and stepdaughter Mary Ann Blessinger), and one female 30-39 (second wife Sarah Magdalena).9 The family has not been found in the 1850 census, except for their presumed daughter Catharine, who was then living with the family of Andrew and Phebe Proudfit (Phebe was a sister of Adam Artman) in Montgomery Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio.10 Adam and Sarah are listed in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1860 census, with (their children) Catharine, Amelia, Wm. H., Phoeba, and James E.3
He died intestate, and on 21 March 1868 his son George was appointed administrator of his estate. M. C. Mason, Martin Mason, and James Alberson were appointed as appraisers.11
Note that the birth dates we have for at least some of Adam and Magdalena's children are questionable. Most come from death records; no birth records have been found for any of their children. For example, their daughter Margaret's birth date of 10 September 1835 is about four months before the date we have for her parents' marriage. And the birth dates we have for Amelia Artman (March 1847) and William Henry Artman (6 August 1847) can't both be correct.
