Within a few years after his birth his family moved to Bedford Co., Pennsylvania, to the area that is now German Twp., Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.3
Soon after their daughter Elizabeth's birth in 1794, he and his wife Margaret moved to Hardin Co., Kentucky, probably with Michael's parents and all of his siblings (except possibly his sister Nancy, who may have moved there earlier). Tradition says they traveled down the Ohio River using flatboats, and may have stayed for a time near what is now Louisville. The area where they settled became part of Grayson Co., Kentucky, in 1810.4 His first documented appearance in Hardin Co. is in a 1799 tax list.5
On 5 October 1800 he bought 188 acres "on the waters of Big Clifty" in Hardin Co. from William Brownfield for £40.6 He was taxed on this land from 1800 to 1816, and his wife Margaret was taxed on it in 1817 and 1818.3
On 26 October 1809 he and others, including his brother Jacob, were ordered to build a mill.7
He is listed in the 1810 census in Grayson Co., Kentucky, with with one male under 10 (probably Adam), three males 10-15 (David, Michael, Solomon), one male 26-44 (himself), four females under 10 (Phebe, Barbara, Mary, Margaret), one female 16-25 (Elizabeth), and one female 26-44 (wife Margaret).8
A few years before his death, he became active in the Beaver Dam Creek Baptist Church in Grayson Co., joining on 11 October 1811.3 Noted in the church records was a complaint he brought against Mahu Harris on 5 December 1812 for being intoxicated and wanting to fight. On 9 January 1813 Harris was summoned to a meeting on the charge.3

- [S3757] 1820 U.S. Census, Margaret Artman, Richland Co., Ohio. Information in the 1820 census was supposed to be recorded as of the official enumeration date, which was 7 August 1820. Note that Margaret's daughter Elizabeth would have then been 26, and not yet married, but she is apparently not included in the household. However, she married on 28 September 1820, and it's likely Margaret's household was enumerated after that date, when she was no longer living there.

- [S3346] Her cemetery marker lists her death date as 10 October 1825, but this is believed to be an error. An autobiographical sketch written by her husband Ephraim Barker says "she lived four years [after their marriage] and died, left a child, female, sixteen hours old," and that the child survived. Her daughter Elizabeth was born 10 October 1824, as shown by her own cemetery marker, and her entry in the 1900 census listing her birth date as October 1824.

In the tax lists for Grayson Co., Kentucky, he first appeared in 1816 with ten acres of land, but he was not yet 21 years old. In 1817 he was again listed, now age 21, with ten acres of land and a horse. In 1818 he's listed as age 21, but without any land.3
He probably moved with his mother and siblings to Orange Twp., Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, about 1819, where her parents and brothers had settled earlier.5,6
On 15 August 1829 he bought lot No. 16 in the town of Orange, Richland Co. (now Ashland Co.), Ohio, measuring 42 by 127 feet, from Amos and Mary Norris for $20.12 1/2, and later opened a boot and shoe making shop there.3
He died intestate, and on 7 November 1837 his widow Eliza Artman and Charles R. Deming were appointed administrators of his estate. George Poff and Jacob Fast were named as sureties, and Jacob Crouse, Jacob Mytes, and Andrew Mason were appointed as appraisers.7 The inventory of his estate, not including items set off to the widow for a year's support, was presented in court on 27 December 1837, and included various farming tools, a set of shoemaking tools, a mare, and a calf. The total appraised value was $82.04. The items set off to the widow were valued at $100, and included corn, a mare, 3 hogs, 8 geese, a clock, and a wagon. Sold at auction, the property netted $88.00. After payment of final medical, funeral, and probate expenses, $12 remained to pay claims against the estate totaling $56.20; each claimant was paid a pro-rated amount of the $12. The final settlement was recorded in April 1840.8
