After his father's death in 1837, he was sent to live with his uncle Michael Artman in Huron Co., Ohio.1 He is listed there in his uncle's household in Fairfield Twp. in the 1850 census.3 During the 1852-53 school year he was a student at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Lorain Co., Ohio.1 After their marriage, he and his wife Elizabeth lived in New Haven Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, where they are listed in the censuses from 1860 to 1880.4,5,6
In 1895 he was involved in an altercation with a neighbor, Alfred Blanchard, over a property boundary. Blanchard had purchased some of his property at a sheriff's sale the previous year. On 15 April Artman was attempting to erect a fence along four acres of the property that he claimed were not part of the sale. Blanchard disagreed, and ordered Artman off the property, physically pushing him. Artman pulled a revolver, and while the two men fought over it Blanchard was shot "in the bowels." Initial news reports said that Blanchard would likely die, but he turned out to be not as badly wounded as originally thought.
Artman immediately reported the incident and turned himself in to the officials in Plymouth, Ohio. At a hearing there the next day he was bound over to Common Pleas Court, posted bail of $800, and was released.
His trial was initially set to begin on 30 September 1895 in Norwalk, Ohio, but was apparently delayed until Friday, 4 October. "Quite a good many" people from his home in New Haven Twp. traveled to Norwalk for the trial. The case went to the jury early Tuesday afternoon (8 October), and after deliberating 30 minutes they returned with a verdict of not guilty.7
Apparently not long after his trial he and his wife Elizabeth moved to Shiloh, Richland Co., Ohio, as they are listed there in the 1900 census.8
On 27 August 1904, very soon after his wife's death, he sold most of his personal property and household goods at a public sale9, and apparently moved to Decatur, Adams Co., Indiana, where he is listed with his son Andrew's family in the 1910 and 1920 censuses.10,11
He and Elizabeth had three children, Zelma Viola (b 27 December 1855, d 6 May 1856) Everett Uriah (b 10 January 1860, d 21 December 1932), Andrew Danford (b 9 November 1861, d 30 April 1944).12

She is presumably the female age 20-29 listed with her husband Michael (age 30-39) in the 1830 census in Ripley Twp., Huron Co., Ohio.5 She and Michael probably moved to Fairfield Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, about 1833.6,7
After the death of her husband's brother Solomon in 1837, Solomon's sons Henry and Michael came to live with them in Huron Co., Ohio, at least for a time.8 There is a listing for a Michael Artman in the 1840 census for Fairfield Twp., Huron Co., Ohio, with one male under age 5, one 5-9, and one 30-39, and one female under 5 and one 20-29. Although the ages aren't exactly consistent, this is probably Michael Artman (about age 40), his wife Jane (about 34), and their nephew Michael (5). The identification of the other two children is unclear. They could be other children of Michael's brother Solomon (son Henry was then 9, daughter Phoebe was 7, and son John was 3), although the entry for Solomon's widow Eliza in the 1840 census also includes children fitting these ages.9,10
She and Michael are again listed in Fairfield Twp. in 1850 and 1860. Their nephew Michael was still with them in 1850. Listed with them in 1860 were a servant Lucina Larkin (age 23), farm laborers Jno. Dick (20) and Reuben Coon (70), Zobeda Coon (68, probably Reuben's wife), and Leroy Harris (11).11,12
She and Michael were parties in several land transactions in Huron Co. from 1825 to 1864.13 In the 1850 census Michael's real estate was valued at $4500; in 1860 it was $8500, with $1500 in personal property.11,12
They moved to Hillsdale, Hillsdale Co., Michigan, possibly about 1864, the date of their last land sale recorded in Huron Co.13,14 They are listed there in the 1870 census, with real estate worth $1500 and a personal estate of $12,000.14

William and Margaret (Artman) Murphy reportedly had four sons and one daughter, and the 1840 census listing for Wm. Murphey is consistent with that, with one of the sons age 10-14, who could be this Lewis. However, the only source found for his name and birth date (other than un-sourced online trees) is the Artman genealogy. No other record for him has been found.2,3,4,1

He and his wife Sarah lived in Fulton Co., Illinois, where they are listed in Cass Twp. in the 1860-1880 censuses5,6,7, and in the town of Cuba in the 1900 census.3 He is listed as blind in the 1860 census, perhaps erroneously, as he is not listed as blind in any of the other censuses.5
He and Sarah had the following known children: Samantha (b abt 1857), James W. (b 25 December 1857, d 24 June 1942), Charles Perry (b 6 May 1863, d 18 January 1922), Estella Rachel (b 29 September 1872, d 12 November 1947).8,9,10,5,7,11

- [S3346] It should be noted that Samantha's birth date, and possibly the identification of her parents, is uncertain. She is listed with the family in the 1860 and 1870 censuses as age 3 and 13, indicating a birth date of about 1857. She married Nicholas T. Sly 8 May 1876 in Fulton Co., and according to her grave marker died 3 March 1878 at age 23 years 1 month 8 days, which gives a birth date of 26 January 1855. Abram Murphy and Sarah Henderson were married just four days earlier (22 January 1855), and Abram's listing in the 1855 Illinois state census, dated 3 July 1855, does not include a child, just one male and one female, each aged 20-30. The most likely explanation is that Samantha's death date or age shown on her grave marker is wrong, but it's also possible that she was adopted by Abram and Sarah after their marriage.
