  10. [S3346] It should be noted that Samantha's birth date, and possibly the identification of her parents, is uncertain. She is listed with the family in the 1860 and 1870 censuses as age 3 and 13, indicating a birth date of about 1857. She married Nicholas T. Sly 8 May 1876 in Fulton Co., and according to her grave marker died 3 March 1878 at age 23 years 1 month 8 days, which gives a birth date of 26 January 1855. Abram Murphy and Sarah Henderson were married just four days earlier (22 January 1855), and Abram's listing in the 1855 Illinois state census, dated 3 July 1855, does not include a child, just one male and one female, each aged 20-30. The most likely explanation is that Samantha's death date or age shown on her grave marker is wrong, but it's also possible that she was adopted by Abram and Sarah after their marriage.

She and her husband Robert moved from Ohio to Michigan sometime between 24 October 1853, when their son Thomas was born in Ashland Co., Ohio, and 27 May 1857, when their daughter Mary was born in Carmel Twp., Eaton Co., Michigan.3 They are listed in Carmel Twp. in the 1860 census, with their children Thomas and Mary.4 She and her children actually appear twice in the 1860 census. They are also listed with her parents in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio.5
On 28 July 1865, when she applied for a pension after her husband's death from an illness contracted while serving in the Union Army during the Civil War (Appl. No. 103672, Cert.      Margaret A. Shaver was born in September 1840 in Ohio.1,2 She married George W. Hollis on 2 May 1867 in Fulton Co., Illinois.3,4
She probably moved to Putman Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, with her parents about 1865 or 1866.5,6 She and her husband George are listed in the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Lewistown, Fulton Co., Illinois.7,8 Although they are listed in Fulton Co. in the 1880 census, George is also listed in the city directories for Peoria, Illinois, in neighboring Peoria Co., starting in 1875. Their children Andrew, Cordelia, and James are also listed in Peoria in various years between 1884 and 1899, and Margaret is listed there as George's widow in 1898 and 1899.9 By 1900 she had moved back to Ohio, where she is listed in the census with her daughter Cordelia and son James in Shelby, Richland Co.2
Ancestry trees list Margaret as being born 6 September 1839 in Ashland Co., Ohio, and dying there 8 April 1907, and list her husband George as dying 24 May 1898 in Peoria, Illinois. However, no sources have been found online to confirm that.
She and George had the following known children: Andrew (b abt 1868), twins Marshall and Perry A. (b February 1870, both d bef 1880), Cordelia L. (b February 1874), James H. (b abt 1878).7,10,11

MotherMary Artman1 b. Oct 1803, d. 28 Sep 1875
Relationship1st cousin 3 times removed of Charles Edward Towne
John M. Shaver was born about 1844 in Ohio.1,2
He was listed with his parents in Orange Twp., Ashland Co., Ohio, in the 1860 census1, and in Putman Twp., Fulton Co., Illinois, in the 1880 census, both times as single.2
He is probably the John M. Shaver who married Endora M. Naive on 25 September 1870 in Fulton Co.3
A Find A Grave entry for him says he was born May 1844 in Ashland Co., Ohio, and died 26 December 1904 in Sunfield, Eaton Co., Michigan. It also says he married, but was divorced a few months later, and never remarried. However, primary evidence has not been found online to confirm this.4,5 He thus may be the John Shaver born May 1844 in Ohio, and divorced, listed in the 1900 census as a servant in the household of Amos Sprinkl in Carmel Twp., Eaton Co., Michigan.6
