However, her cemetery marker says 20 April 1827, which is consistent with her age reported in the 1850-1870 censuses, and in her marriage record. Also, her brother Charles was born 20 December 1828. It seems likely that she was born in 1827, not 1828.

In 1860, not long after their marriage, he and his wife Mary were living in Hardin Co., Kentucky. Living with them was Isabel Floyd, age 40, no doubt a relative of Mary's.6
He was drafted for one year's service during the Civil War, as a Private in Co. F of the 23rd Kentucky Infantry, and was mustered in on 26 September 1864 in Lebanon, Kentucky, and mustered out 23 June 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. During his service his regiment took part in the Nashville Campaign in November and December 1864, including the Battles of Franklin on 30 November, and Nashville from 15 to 16 December. They pursued Confederate General Hood's Army to the Tennessee River, then moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where they were on duty until March, 1865. They next took part in operations in eastern Tennessee from 15 March to 22 April, and were stationed in Nashville until June.7,8,9
By 1870, after the war, he and Mary had moved to Grayson Co., Kentucky, where their family is listed in the censuses from 1870 to 1920. Living with them in 1870 was Lucy Floyd, age 70, probably Mary's mother. By 1900 seven of their children had left home, leaving Margaret, Melvina, and Charles. Margaret and Charles were still with them in 1910, both single. In 1920 Charles was still there, along with his widowed sister Melvina Purcell and two of her children.10,11,12,13,14
He and Mary had the following known children: Anna Jane (b 12 May 1861, d 16 March 1941), Sarah Lucinda (b 1 December 1863 (the Artman genealogy says 27 November 1863), d 14 February 1934), Rosa Belle (b 11 May 1865), David (b 16 April 1868, d 8 July 1918), Elizabeth (b 24 April 1870), Ellen (b 1 September 1872, d 1965), Margaret (b 24 August 1874), Melvina (b 7 September 1876, d November 1961), Prosha (b 25 March 1879, d November 1956), Charles Alexander (b 1 March 1881, d aft 1 August 1969).3,10,11,12,5,2,15,16

She and her husband James are listed in Grayson Co., Kentucky, in the 1870 census, along with (presumably) their two-year-old daughter, named only as "L. A. Artman."5 In the 1900 census (they have not been found in the 1880 census) they are listed in Hardin Co., Kentucky, with sons Harvey and Charles, and a grandson, John L. Flynn, age 7.6 By 1910 they nad move to Highland Park Twp., Jefferson Co., Kentucky, where they are listed in the census again with their grandson John Flynn, along with five boarders.7
She and James had eight children (with six living in 1900 and five living in 1910), but names are known for just six: L. A. (b abt 1868), Lizzie (b 3 June 1871, d 31 January 1927), Zellia Michael (b 6 October 1762, d 1 March 1933), David (b 17 October 1874), Harvey W. (b May 1880), Charles E.
