In 1880 William Henry Ernsberger and his wife Emily were living on Green St. in Hastings, Barry Co., Michigan. William's widowed mother Ellen was living with them, as was their nephew William Phillips, son of Emily's brother William and his first wife Hannah Sickles.5 They soon afterwards moved to Lapeer, Lapeer Co., Michigan, where their daughter Nellie was born in 18816, and where they are listed on Calhoun St. in the 1900 census.7
When he was married in 1871, he was working as a mechanic, but was a carpenter for most of his life.2,5,7

He and his wife May lived in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan, at 38 S. Saginaw St. in 19003, and at 20 Wesson St., at the corner with S. Saginaw St., in 1910.4 In his 1918 registration for the World War I draft, his permanent home address is listed as 51 O'Reilly St. in Pontiac, Michigan, with his wife at the same address. His occupation is given as painter, but no employer is listed.5 He may be the William Phillips listed as an inmate at the Michigan State Prison in Jackson, Jackson Co., Michigan, in the 1920 census, working as a book binder in the prison print shop.6
The identification of William Phillips's wife as May Hopkins is a bit complex. From the 1900 census, she was born in August 1874 in Michigan, and both of her parents were also born in Michigan. From William's birth record and World War I draft registration, both with the same birth date, it's clear that his address was 51 O'Reilly St. in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1918. From the census, in 1920 William's wife May was living at the same address, but without William, and her mother's name was then Ermina Stoll.
In the censuses there's a Joseph Stoll with wife Ermina in Pontiac, at 124 Wesson St. in 1900 and at 55 O'Riley St. in 1910. From their entries, Joseph and Ermina were married about 1889 or 1890. From the LDS "Michigan Marriages 1868-1925" database, Joseph A. Stoll (age 34) married Ermina (Harrington) Hopkins (34) on 18 Apr 1889 in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan. Their marriage record also indicates that this was Joseph's first marriage, and Ermina's second. Their marriage date (1889), May's birth date (1874), and the fact that this was Joseph's first marriage, imply that May was actually Ermina's daughter from a previous marriage, but was listed with her stepfather's surname in the 1910 census.
Again from the LDS "Michigan Marriages 1868-1925" database, George Hopkins (age 24) married Emanda Harrington (age 16) on 21 Nov 1870 in Owosso, Shiawassee Co., Michigan. Also, George M. Hopkins (age 39) married Minnie Vanderwerf (age 24) on 24 Feb 1887 in Attica, Lapeer Co., Michigan. The 1880 census lists George (33) and Ermina Hopkins (25), with a daughter May (5), in Shiawassee Co., Michigan, and the 1900 census lists George (51) and Minnie Hopkins (36), in Oakland Co., Michigan.
Thus, George Hopkins and Ermina Harrington married in November 1870, and had May in August 1874. They divorced sometime between 1880 (when they were listed together in the census) and 1887 (when George remarried). Ermina was also remarried, to Joseph Stoll in 1889.3,1,2,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14

- [S2783] 1910 U.S. Census, Joseph Stoll household, Oakland Co., Michigan. In 1910 May is listed with them as a daughter, age 30 and single. (This doesn't quite fit with William's wife May, since she's listed with him in 1910 at age 36. But the info for her with the Stolls in 1910 may be wrong. The census also lists May's parents as both being born in New York, but lists Joseph and Ermina themselves as both being born in Michigan. And May's census entries with William Phillips lists her parents as being born in Michigan. The Stolls are listed in the census in the same dwelling house as another family, with a separate address and family number, maybe a duplex. Perhaps the info was given to the census taker by someone other than the Stolls themselves.).
